I am looking for some help on this Devil's Food Cake I am making. I have heard so much about these soaking syrups, and would like to use one for the first time on this cake. Does anyone have any great recipes or ideas on how to do this? Thank you so much for all of your help!

Soaking syrups are the easiest to make. One part sugar to one part water, place in a pot and bring to a boil. Swirl the pot a few times to make sure the sugar dissolves while coming to a boil, but do not stir it.

After it boils, simmer for 1 minute then remove from heat. All the sugar should have dissolved into what is known as simple syrup. Let this come to room temp and use as is or flavor with extracts, liquors, syrups one uses to make Italian sodas or flavored coffees, etc, all to taste.

Chocolate works with just about every flavor, the nut flavors are great, but even almond or vanilla works well.

So you can add coffee creamer to this mixture? We have a chocolate creme creamer that I think would heighten the chocolate experience. I might have to try that some time. I guess since you let it cool before adding you don't have to worry about spoilage?

Not creamer. I don't think that would work, I think. I was talking about the flavoring syrups you can buy, Smart & Final carries many flavors, some even sugar-free. You put a tablespoon in your coffee, such as hazelnut, Irish Crème, etc. You can use these in lieu of alcohol like brandy, Amaretto.

I, unfortunately, don't drink coffee but the next time I'm in the store I'll have to check out the coffee aisle to see what exactly I'm missing out on. I love the smell of coffee though.

Thanks for putting me on the right path now!
