I am baking my first cake tomorrow and taking to my wilton decorating class tomorrow. What is exactly crumb coating and how do I do it? Do I ice the cake with buttercream then wait 30 min and ice it again? Thanks for your help.

Crumb coating is icing the cake with a thin layer of buttercream to seal the loose crumbs on the surface of the cake. Let this layer dry for at least 30 minutes, then ice the cake with about 1/4 inch of buttercream all around.

I prefer to let my crumb coat sit for a few hours. As long as the crumb coat is there to seal it, the cake will not dry out.

You ice it really thin so that you can see the cake through it. It is just to stick down the crumbs. Let it dry and then do a regular coating of icing.
