OK, I'm making my dad a meat loaf cake for father's day. For those of you that haven't seen this before, I am making the "cake" part out of meat loaf, and you "ice" it with Mashed Potatoes. Now I need ideas for decorating. I want it to REALLY look like a cake so I need decorating ideas I can do with mashed potatoes. I can color them and everything but I don't want to use anything else. My dad doesn't like cake, he's a pie man, but LOVES meat loaf so I thought this would be a good gift I could give him that would really surprise him. So get those brains working guys!! TIA

Katy

What about some "carrots" that you could pipe on?

How about some "green pepper" rings?

I KNOW those two things can be piped onto a cake.

Maybe...some...uhhh...what else goes with meatloaf?

This should be fun to watch, and good luck!

Could you do a FPT (Frozen Potato Transfer)? Would the colors run when you reheated the "cake"?

I saw this on Martha Stewart, thought it was a neat idea. I don't remember exactly what she did, seems like it was roses or something. But you might be able to try her web site, she may have a picture there. Hope this helps. icon_biggrin.gif

Looks like she just used the REAL veggies on hers...and then piped on the borders in mashed potatoes with a star tip.

What a novel idea! And, mmm...those potatoes would get kind of crispy on the edges...mmmyuummm!

I think she used peas. You could use radish roses, carrots curls, and sweet pea pods for leaves.

I also saw this on martha stewart on Monday. It was such a great idea. I do remember she used carrots & cut out little stars or flower and green peas.
Here is the link to that recipe:

Yeah, I don't want to use veggies though because I don't want him to know that it's not really cake right away. Do you think I could make mashed potato roses? An FPT is a great idea jewels!!

I am not good at this, but what about the garnishes they make for things out of veggies, radish roses, etc. They would be veggies and they could be taken off if you did not want to eat them with the meat loaf. Plus, you could just put them on right before serving. You could use real leaves--cilantro, lettuce, basil, whatever you want. HTH Be sure to post a pic!!!!!!! Great idea!!!!!

On the top ruffle she has pea's on them. On the side she has little circles of carrots. Hope this helps. Just go to Marthastewart.com and type in meatloaf cake on the search engine. It will go to meatloaf birthday cake.Hope your dad enjoys it.

What about using ketchup as a piping gel? You could put it in a decorating bag fitted with a very small writing tip. icon_biggrin.gif

I did meatloaf cupcakes years ago as an april fool's day dinner surprise for my kids. (they were NOT amused-they HATE meatloaf!) I got the idea from Family Fun Magazine. It's probably on their website. I did a swirl of mashed potatoes on top. I baked the meatloaf in the oversized foil cupcake cups

This won't help you since Father's Day is now over, but thought I would still post since someone may find it usefull if searching the topic.
