I have a cake due in July and it will have a fair amount of detail work on it that I would like to get started as soon as I can so as not to be overly stressed as the date approaches. How far in advance can I make fondant figures for the cake and still have them look good? Do they need to be stored in a certain way until used?

You can make them now and store them in a cool dry place out of sunlight as sunlight will fade the colors.

definitely keep them out of the sun. They will not fade slightly they will fade a lot. Also, from the last cake I did with fondant figures, put them in a place that doesn't have a lot of activity. We put ours in a china cupboard. Otherwise you run the risk that someone will bump them and you will have a piece break off. Good Luck!
