Hi
okay I'm starting on my daughter's wedding cake....and I'm so totally stressed it's unbelievable.......

here's my question:
we're going to have 12, 10, 8 in square layers with a round 6 in top. I have wooden dowels and plastic ones to use for support. But what about the boards underneath? I have one cardboard square for each layer-will that be enough? Should I use several? I have a plastic plate for the top round layer--I'm mostly worried about the squares having enough support.

help! any advice will be appreciated!!

I think one layer of board (wrapped to keep it from getting soggy) is enough. You might want to do 2 on the 10" if you are transporting separately. Use 3 for the bottom 12".

What do you wrap the cake boards in?

I had to make my own drum since they don't sell them here and I didn't have time to order one. I used Sue23's advise and hot glued several corrugated rounds together. I hope they hold!! Plan on covering with wrapping paper and then clear contact paper.

I never use drums. I wrap corrugated cardboard with florist foil. No hot gluing necessary.

I wrap my in press and seal, but I guess your could use contact paper, foil, plastic wrap. Just make sure to cover both sides of the board completely.

okay thanks y'all....I guess I need to make ONE more trip to the store!!

I am transporting the layers separately and then assembling it at the reception site. We have to drive about 3 hours so I'm not going to do much to it till we get there.........

I just need to remember to breathe.....I'll be so glad when this is done!!!!

thanks again..

This may be too late for the trip to the store, but I highly recommend that you use 3/16th inch foamcore under each tier--cut to the exact size of each tier. Corrugated cardboard, even covered, can still bend along the corrugation lines. You don't need to cover foamcore--it doesn't absorb much of anything from the cake, it's lightweight in itself, and it doesn't bend or break easily. It also makes great bottom cakeboards--easy to cover, etc.

Don't forget to enjoy the wedding!

Yes! I like foamboard too. I recommend covering it if it is going to show. It does get some grease absorbtion and doesn't look as nice.

Oh, yes, definitely cover it if it's going to show--as in the bottom "decorative" board under a tier (used like a separator plate) or an entire cake--but I also use a board under every tier that is cut to the exact diameter of the tier, so it never shows.

do you always cover your boards that go in between the layers?? I never have - just put the cake boards in thinking that is what you are suppose to do.

Just plain cardboard will get soggy and make the dowels useless. You should always cover it.

this all good advice,I am getting ready to do a 4 tier stack of round
3'' cakes for a wedding and now I think it is wiser to go with the foamboard in between layers, instead of cardboard circles!!i always use foamboard for my sheetcakes but never thought to use it for this icon_lol.gif

How do you guys get a nice round cut for the foamboard? I've only used it for square/rectangle. Any tips and tricks??

I use a hot knife to cut all of my boards--makes quick work & nice clean edges.
