Ok my plan backfired! I was planning on getting some dry ice and wrappign ti well to keep the stuff cold for the 12 hour trip. But now i don't have the dry ice. I found out the hard way that they don't sell dry ice to minors. Which i think is ridiculous. So anyways, the store is closed now, my plan backfired and now i'm left with just plain ice which is ganan be a pain in the arse to do. Any suggestions out there?? icon_sad.gif

I have to leave at 5pmEST so no time for the grocery store and i cannot let these cake balls melt. I have so many of them i jsut stuck them in big ziplock bags together, it's be a disaster if they all melted. icon_cry.gif

Maybe you could use some "fake ice" packs if you have 'em frozen?

Or, if you're traveling with the big rubbermaid-type totes, you could ice up really well around those?

If you pass a FOOD CITY on the way, they open at 6 am...they usually sell dry ice there.

Get 'em well chilled/frozen before you leave, too...make sure they're well "anchored" on the boards.

GAH! Let us know how it works out...

Best of luck,

hiya ferret,
they do sell dry ice at walmart. You could probably get an adult to buy it for you (someone you know silly, LOL) Hopefully that helps.

I know it might be a pain but is there any way for you to lay all of the cake balls on parchment so that they don't stick together and maybe layer them in some way. Then you could ice up a big plastic gin like the ones at Wal-mart with reg. ice and put the cake balls on top of the ice. Maybe use small bins to sit inside the large iced bin.

If you have (or can get) two big rubbermaid containers, I think this would work:

Get a bag of ice, put it in the bottom of one big container, then sit another container inside of it and put the food in the second one. If you have a lid for the second container, even better, but if not, just put a piece of cardboard or something on top to help insulate it a bit, and lay a couple of blankets over the whole assembly.

It would work kinda like a cooler, but could be any size you want.

You might have to stop along the way to change the ice, and try not to have it where the sun will shine right on it if possible.

hth and good luck!

Laura.

Off topic, since I have no idea where you can even buy dry ice, but I have a question. I noticed you said they don't sell it to minors, and looking at the professionalism of your cakes, I would love to know how old you are!!

WOW! I really have to say, you do INCREDIBLE work! How long have you been decorating cakes for?

My 12 year old son is quite interested in decorating cakes and loves to help me out. He did his own cake for me for Mother's Day, and it was really cute! I just hope he keeps the interest, so he can take over for me someday! LOL

LOl! Thank you both! I really do hope your son stays interested! It'd be great to see his work as he improves! icon_biggrin.gif

To answer your question, i've been bakign since i was 5(my mom did let me use the oven on my own, with her in the kitchen watching of course LOL). I think the first thing i did was i use to always hate the easy-bake oven little ligthbulb oven. So i'd make the mix and put it in the pan and bake it in the real oven. Lol I jsut recently started cake decorating 3 or so years. Though i stopped for about 3/4 a year myabe a whole year because of a bad experience with a wilton instructor. But after my little "rest" i got back at it. Oddly enough it's my huge stress and anger releiver. So whenever i need a way to vent i just make and decorate a cake. And it's something to share with everyone. icon_smile.gif

Plus what could me better? LOL I love science and lvoe art, mix the two and you have decorated cakes. thumbs_up.gif

To be back on topic Lol i have a smaller playmate or whatever cooler and a larger cooler. Do you think if i just put the cake balls in the smaller cooler with no ice, then stick it in the larger cooler filled with ice, it'd keep for 12 hours? I really want to avoid having to changwe it, maybe change it once.
