I'm doing a book cake (closed book) for my DH's birthday. Do you actually put the cake on top of the fondant and wrap it around the book? Do you carve a little out of the three "page" sides so that they are slightly in more than the cover? How about the binding? Is that carved out as well?
TIA!!
I have to make a book cake next week, good timing!!!! bump!!! Thanks!!!!!
bump...i would like to know also, have a book cake coming in july.
Did a book cake for teacher appreciation day last week. It was two books stacked. I made a rectangular cake and carved the spine and page sides. It was pretty easy, not much carving to do. Used the WASC recipe and I think having a nice dense cake helps. Keep in mind that you should carve deeper than you think to allow for icing. The page sides especially because I put an extra layer of fondant to look like pages. I am sorry I don't have my pictures posted yet. I have to figure out how to do it. Good luck.
I made a graduation cake last week. I made a 11X15 for the bottom and a 7X11 for the top. I frosted the top and sides of the cakes them for 3 of the sides I used my triangle edging tool to make the pages. After that I rolled out a piece of fondant alittle larger than the top of the book plus add the height of the spin of the book. So if your cake is 11X15X2 then your fondant should be about 13 1/2 X 15 1/2 ( you can take a pair of sissors and trim around the edges if they stretch to much) Lay the fondant down starting at the spine of the book and smooth. I used a putty knife to tuck the fondant under the spine of the book. Cut (3 ) 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces of fondant to lay around the bottom of the book to look like the bottom cover. Tuck in carefully with the putty knife. I used my fonger to rub the dent in the book's spine.
