I have some thick candy apple sucker sticks for the corners but what would I use for the three ropes? I think ribbon will fall off and strings of fondant are too hard to work with...what would you suggest? I have to drive with this cake.

I made one and the lady used toy turnbuckles from her son's toy. I was originally going to use some sort of sticks, but maybe if you use a knife and notch the stick then add yarn or something it will stay in place.

What about licorice laces? They come in red or black. This is what they look like.

When I made my son's wrestling ring I used plastic canvas yarn and hot glued them to the posts. Worked great!
