hi everyone,
Is the store bought fondant alright to use? I want to make things easy for my first ever cake. Any suggestions? What kind of filling works best? My sister was hoping for a strawberry flavoured cake, but don't know how well that will go with the hawaiian theme! Any thoughts are appreciated.

what else can I buy premade?

Mel
I have only ever used premade fondant. My favourite that you can get in the USA is fondX and you can get it from here

Melissa,

Store bought fondant CAN be good, as long as it is not the Wilton Brand. It tastes horrible! Your best bet would be to find a place that sells Satin Ice or Fondx. I don't know what area you are in, but surely there is a cake supply store somewhere near you that may sell these. If not, you could order them online.

Otherwise, you could try the marshmallow Fondant recipe in the recipe files here. I've never tried it, but most people on the site just love it.

I suggest you do a test of the MMF and see how well you like it. It won't cost much and not hard to make at all. I love the MMF have covered many cakes with it with no problem at all.

thanks for all the tips - I think I'll stick with the store bought fondant, but will be sure to buy the right kind. I'll also try to make the MMF to see how it works.

Another place to get FondX & Satin Ice is Pfiel & Holing (www.cakedeco.com). I just got some pans from there and they are pretty speedy and I noticed that their FondX is cheaper than at FondX's home site. They are a wholesale place but they sell to anyone. I have only made my own fondant once and it was a disaster so I buy it now. I have used Satin Ice but have recently stuck with FondX. They are both great so you can't go wrong with either.
If you don't want to do strawberry cake you could always make a vanilla cake with strawberry fruit filling. I have done that before and its great. I use pastry filling that I get at a local cake shop but you could probably just use preserves.
HTH,
Heather
