I'm having to use my first dummie cake this coming weekend for a fountain wedding cake. I've never had to use one, so I'm not real sure how to do so. It's an 18" styrofoam dummie and I know I'm suppose to wrap it in saran wrap so I can reuse it again later. But is there anything else I need to know? Does it frost just like a real cake. I'm just nervous, I want this to be perfect. Thanks so much everyone, ya'll are the greatest. God Bless!
I just did a fondant covered dummie--practice for wedding cake. 1 layer will be dummie. It is a little harder than you think because it has no weight. I think the next one I will ice before I cover with fondant because I don't want the top edge to be so sharp--to match the fondant covered cake.
I think putting it on a grippy pad would help keep it from flying off the turntable when you need to apply pressure to it.
Other than that, it's kind of fun. Maybe someone else has more experience......
Thanks, I did think of that, just pictured myself carving it down to a nub trying to even it out.
Maybe I'll see what the other layers look like covered, then decide. The fondant is already drying out pretty bad so I can see that it would be best to cover it near to the same time as I do the cake. But I used it to try the quilted template and attach the pearls--just used fondant mixed with a little water as glue--Livin' and Learnin' !!
Ny wilton class instructor told me to use piping gel under the fondant. Just semar it all over and cover with the fondant. I guess it's to help it stick to the styro cake dummy!
