We are so lucky to be dedicating our brand new church this Sunday and yesterday at mass our priest asked for volunteer cake decorators.I just finished all three Wilton courses and after church I volunteered. However they want the cake to look like......the new church. We don't have to bake the cakes as they will be baking all the slab cakes for us.
We are going to stack the cakes and then carve the roofline.I am going to make the steeple and arches on the front out of rice crispies.
I need to know if there is a really good crumbcoat recipe and do you have to do anything special to the rice krispies before you ice them.
I really need your help as this cake has to serve 800.I do have a couple of other ladies helping.
I know this is the best referrence site out there and you ladies rock.
Thanks in advance and I will post a pic next week. Please pray for me. I am going to need it.

NO PRESSURE HERE IS THERE! LOL I THINK I read where you can do your thing with the rice krispies and then ice them with royal icing, let it dry, sand it smooth and then cover in fondant. I suppose you could also ice it with buttercream over the RI as well. The only time I've used rice krispies I needed a "bumpy" look so didn't have to do anything.

GOOD LUCK!! POST A PIC! and God will Bless You for serving your church! Trust me! That is the BEST part of my cakin' is when I do things for my church!

I've heard that you make the rice krispy treats as usual, but first smash the cereal in a food processor to the final look will be smoother.

For a crumb coat on cake, I just thin down my regular crusting buttercream. Add more liquid (1/2 tbsp at a time) until it's very easy to spread. It shoudl glide right on the cake, but still form peaks in the bowl.

I've read here to delete the butter from the rice krispies recipe so that it won't droop, although I haven't worked with this yet.
And welcome to CC!

Toba Garrett puts cake crumbs in her icing for her crumb coat. I would do the same. Lots of luck and prayers.
