Hi all! I have a co-worker who is receiving his canadian citzenship next friday and there are plans for a suprise party with a cake for him.

My problem is ideas for everything from the cake to what to do for / at the party! There will be about 50 ppl and the guy is originally from Cuba. I don't want to do a simple Canada Flag cake, but something a little more creative to show off my talents.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

heh, the first thing that popped into my mind was a flag cake icon_lol.gif ummm...well, what represents Canada? I can think of quite a few things for the USA but am kinda stumped with Canada. Aren't maple trees important there? hockey? you could do a tiered cake with some ideas that (hopefully) people here will come up with and then drape the flag over the side of the cake maybe...

Congrats for your friend. That's a great thing!

Have you decided what kind of cake you're making? How about a tres leches cake (cuban) with hocky pucks and things around it? (Sorry. I'm so lame. I can't think of anything else representative of Canada other than hockey... icon_redface.gif )

Thanks!

I love the idea of draping the flag over the cake! Hockey and Canada are definitely hand in hand.

But I'll have to admit, what is a tres leches cake?

It will probably be tiered and I like the idea of having other Canadiana stuff around the teirs.

Its delicious, is what it is! hahah!! icon_lol.gif

Its basically a really dense white cake that is "soaked" with three milks (hence "tres leches") - Condensed, evaporated & cream or half & half. I dont really completely drench it though. I just make the milk mixture and then brush it on to the cake until it soaks up a bunch of it. You can also torte it and fill it with strawberrys - thats pretty authentic cuban, too (according to a good friend of mine who is also cuban). Then its frosted with either meringue or whipped cream. I dont know how good it'd be for stacking, though... Either way, its so freeking good!!! thumbs_up.gif

I looked at a couple of websites about Canada and saw that the telephone, am radio, the television, and trivial pursuit are all invented by canadians. The national animal is the beaver, the national police force is the mounties, and it also said that most of the canadian hockey players sport a mullet.

And then there's canadian bacon, and what about the infamous "eh?"...lol

Hope some of that helps!!

mmm yes, do a tres leches if you can thumbs_up.gif If you need a recipe, let me know and I'll PM you with it. You can't just use any white cake. It has to be strong enough not to fall apart when you soak in the milks icon_smile.gif

LMAO. All hockey players wear mullets! I will admit some do, but there are some extremely hot non-mullet wearing hockey players icon_biggrin.gif

I would love the tres leches cake recipe LaSombra! Would it taste ok iced in buttercream or should I used a meringue based icing? I might not do them stacked but 2 or 3 different flavour cakes varying height pillars so I can make this!!

Now I'm off to try moulding beavers! This cake will be fun!

Thanks for all the wonderful ideas.

how about the two flags on either side of the cake with a small half-round bridge between the two. you could then mold a small male figure standing on the bridge.

I'm on my way out the door for my son's Tball practice so I can't PM you right now but I will this evening icon_smile.gif I recommend a lighter frosting for tres leches. Meringue is good, whipped cream is good, anything light like that. I always use my whipped frosting recipe that I have posted in the recipe section here.

It'll be a fun cake icon_biggrin.gif

Is there anything that he has become interested in since coming to Canada? Hockey is obviously a good one! What attracted him to Canada - is there anything you could work on for that? What about skiing? Rodeo?

What part of Canada is he from? That could give you some ideas of celebrations that go on there.

Good Luck!

We are in Vancouver, BC. I know he came to Canada following a girl and stayed around after that didn't work out so I don't want to include that. But Vancouver is oceans and mountains and rain and expensive housing icon_confused.gif so I could incorporate that.

Everyone's ideas are so great. I'm leaning towards doing 2 cakes with the bridge joining the 2 (wow idea!) and (one tres leches) decorated like an island with the cuban flag draping over top and then other cake decorated with a mini mountain and an ocean beach with mini beavers, hockey sticks, and maple leaves with the canadian flag draped over top.

And then the writing "Welcome to Canada, Eh" on the board.

I'm so excited to start on this now! I'll shock and aw everyone (including myself) at work!
