MMF is yummy but
Ok so I have become accustom to playing with Wilton Fondant. I say, playing with because we all know that it should not be considered edible in any sense of the word!!!
It kind of reminds me of the first gift my husband ever gave me while we were only dating. He made the mistake of telling me he had gotten me a gift, so I pestered him to no end with questions he finally gave in to me and said that it was not the Hope Diamond and that I could eat it Imagine my surprise when I received a necklace!!!! I accused him of lying to me due to the, you could eat it part of the hint. He informed me that technically it was small enough that I COULD in fact eat it If I wanted.
So long story short when someone says you can eat something that does not necessarily mean that you SHOULD eat it or that it would be enjoyable. As is true in the case of Wiltons Fondant.
SOOOOO I had a ball making my first batch of MMF and to my delight it is yummy! However when I covered the cake I had my first Fondant disaster!!! The most wrinkled stretchy mess youd ever want to see. It wouldnt even smooth on the cake without sticking to my fondant smoother (yes it was greased.) My questions are these: Did I add too much water? Is this the way MMF normally acts? What can I do to improve my next batch (if there is a next one) is there still another alternative to Wiltons ghastly goo? Should I not have greased my fondant smoother? What is going on, please advise!!!!
Thanks so much.
Gonna bump you up here. I have read many times that CC members really like the brands fondx and satin ice. Also another one I read recently is chocopan fondant is yummy! I am wondering if the humidity was bad there. That can really effect your MMF=( Also, someone was kind enough to post a website to get free samples of a fondant brand that is supposed to be really good too. She mentioned getting like 3-4 different flavors from them. She said to go to the website cocoaoutlet.com for the samples. Hopefully someone with more experience buying fondant can help ya out=) Jen
I just made Rhonda's MMF for the first time and I loved it. I didn't use it until two days later. Also, I know that when I was making it, it seemed too soft and I wound up adding an additional cup of powdered sugar ( the recipe says to add another cup if you need to, but I actually added two more when all was said and done
). I wasn't sure if I was going to ruin the fondant, but I did it anyway. Now next time I make it, if I need to add more sugar, I know it's ok to do it. I used the fondant to make the Siamese cat in my photos. I know it's not as super-wow as some of the cakes on CC, but I'm relatively proud of her! I especially love her butt
. Hope my info. helped some... ![]()
Yes, it does have a decent flavor but it is quite a bit harder to work with. It isn't as stretchy so it takes some practice.
I agree - MMF tastes great! However, I can never get just the right consistency either. It seems like it's either too hard, too strechy, or when I think I have it right and cover my cake, there are a bunch of imperfections. So. I've now concluded that I will still make MMF to cover sugar cookies, but I have ended up buying better quality pre-made fondant for cakes. It costs more, but when you figure in the time trying to get the perfect batch of MMF, or covering and re-covering cakes because it just doesn't look great, I think the extra cost is worth it.
I just bought a 10 pound tub of Fondx for $32 at my local cake shop. Considering how many cakes that'll cove,r it's a pretty good deal. Plus, Fondx (IMO) is pretty similar to taste as the MMF. It's definitely no comparison to Wilton's!
