HI

Some of you may remember my thread a little while back titled "THAT'S ONE HUGE CAKE!" Well, I accepted the job and need some ideas. This is going to be a 5 foot by 2 foot cake layered with chocolate cake and vanilla or golden cake (haven't decided) and is for Canada day. I was thinking of drawing a map of Canada on the cake and doing FBCT of all of the provinicial flags for each province and placing the flags on the corresponding province. That's all I've got right now.....I want it to be somewhat simple but yet catch everyone's eye. I'm not making anything on this cake but thought it would be a great opportunity for some exposure within the community as I am just starting my business......

Please share your creative ideas!!

What about doing the flags in Colorflow and using lollypop sticks to have them sticking up from each province in the map instead of on them? I love the map idea though.

mushbug, please tell me more... wouldn't colorflow be too thin? How would you attach it to the lollipop stick? These will probably be a fair size flag...but I love the concept....hmmm wonder if I could get it to work???

Okay, where's Doug.....he's usually got diagrams galore LOL!

Could you make the flags from decorated cookies?

HI! I didn't read the other thread but I thought I will give a word of warning. Be sure the cake board will fit through your doorway level and fit in your vehicle! I did one once that almost didn't make it out the door!!

The flags would be most durable on fondant I think.

Best of luck!

I would say to make each flag about 3-4 inches, like mabie a smidge bigger than the reply box I am typing in now. You can attach it to the sticks using royal icing as glue. You would either have to have a "back" side to your cake, or make 2 of each flag and sandwich them once they dry onto the stick. Depending on the size of the flags, you could use lollypop sticks or popcycle sticks. I think the longer the stick the better so it will stay upright. You could even make a rosette on the fbct to stick the "flagposts"in to get them a little more stable. As far as the thickness goes, they will be about as fragile as any colorflow piece, but just pillow the icing as much as you can and use a larger tip (like a 5) for the outline to give you as much thickness as possible. I wouldn't plan on this idea though unless you try making one or two flags first and see how it turns out, I would hate to have you do all the work then find out my idea kept falling over or breaking and ruined it all. icon_smile.gif
Good Luck.

Oh wait, I like the cookie idea even better, less chance of them breaking. Then you could use either royal or fondnat to decorate the cookies.

Why not BUT the little flags? They don't have to be edible, right? Colorflow map, stick those little flags in. For the border, do a free-form color string overlay on a white shell border. Include all the colors of the map pieces, and just let the strings fall where they may. Am I explaining this okay?? Kinda like making sotas, but only on top of the shell border...

Big, colorful, fast and easy.

If you put cookies on a stick make sure they are thick enough or they will fall off of the stick. And I think a really thick cookie would ruin the look of your cake, especially since you would need quite a few of them. What about making the flags from chocolate (kind of like a FBCT but using colored chocolate. I have not tried this technique myself, but have seen so many wonderful examples of it on this site.

No updates yet. Still working out the little kinks. I've already started making the cakes and have been cursing because now all of a sudden I have a problem making cakes!!! icon_mad.gif I'm still going with the idea of the map of Canada and I think I'm still going to do the FBCT's for each flag. The flags aren't as big as I thought they would have to be, phew! There have been problems with the guy coordinating this, he's not the easiest to deal with....just with minor things but just enough to aggravate you. He likes to delegate everything out which is wonderful, but then let me have a little control.....anyways, nothing too big just annoying!

Zmama, I LOVE your idea of the strings on the shell border, how do I do that? It would look very festive and fun! Please explain more.

I will keep you all updated.....I said I wasn't going to take any more orders for this week or next week and now I have 3 orders! I just can't say no. Oh well, I'll get it done!

Making a practice cake today. I've seen others on here do the border, but can't find the pic. I'll do one, and post a pic of the border. We used to do them at the bakery.

So sorry! The camera is dead. However, I used a couple tips on the "lazy string" part of theborder, and found tip 3 would work best. Tip one breaks, tip 2 is cute, but curls on itself and breaks. Tip 3 is easier to work with. Anything bigger was too much on my little cake, but might work better for large cakes. I just held it over the border, and let it fall where it may. DF loved it, not as "girly" and more fun.
