I am currently in the Wilton Cake Decorating class. I am in course 1 and this Wed. is when we bring in our first cake to decorate. She said that you can bring in any cake you want. So my question is should I bring in just a round cake or should I bring in the Blues Clues character cake that I hope to do for my daughter's birthday. If you have any tips for me I would love to hear them. Thanks icon_biggrin.gif

I would bake a round cake, but think out of the box and maybe do something with blues clues on the side and top.....a basic blues clues cake is all drop stars and will be very tiring and time consuming for your first cake.

WE WERE TOLD FOR OUR FIRST CAKE WE COULD BRING IN WHATEVER WE WANTED. IN THE FIRST CLASS YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO PIPE STARS. OUR INSTRUCTOR GAVE US 30 MINUTES CLASS TIME. I WAS ABLE TO DO 3 FLOWERS AND TOP AND BOTTOM BORDER. HOPE THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN

In my class we made the rainbow cake so we had to bring in a round cake already iced and bring in our colored icing separately. I know others have made different cakes but do you know what you will be working on in class? I would think the Blue's Clues cake might be too time consuming (at least for me it would )

I agree, that is alot of stars for your first cake. Practice on a smaller one....

Good Choice Sara, a round would be the best, because you will probably be learning more than just piping stars. This way, you can possibly use other techniques as well, whereas on the blues clue pan, you will limited to just using the Stars.

When I start a new course 1, I always suggest to my students that they either do the rainbow cake or the blossom cake in the back of the book, on page 42 (or 46, can't remember for sure).

After you go through the lesson you will have around 30 mins to decorate and there is no way to finish a character cake, even a basis one or two color one, in that period of time. Also character pans usually involve a ton of colors.

I want my students to be able to take a completed cake home, and not
have to go home and finish the cake.
