Hopefully someone can HELP out there! I posted earlier and couldn't get any advice......HOW in the world can I color my buttercream GOLD?? ANY ideas would be great ASAP!! (TIA) thumbs_up.gificon_confused.gificon_confused.gif BTW....... I need a shimmery deep gold (as with pearl or luster dust) all over the cake, as you would see a fondant covered cake. I don't however, have an airbrush tool icon_mad.gif ..are there any other alternatives?? THANKS! thumbs_up.gif

K here goes hun. First dye your bc "lemon yellow" or an orangish or warm yellow then put in some violet (yep you got it) violet a little at a time until you get the shade of gold that you are looking for.

mix yellow with a bit of brown or you have to air brush with gold luster dust mixed with vodka

I wish I was more experienced and could give you some advice! I would love to know if it is possible! Are you looking for a gold buttercream to ice the entire cake? If so, I'm clueless. If you could get by with just using gold accents, try the recipe on here for "Piping silver and gold", which uses luster dust. It's in my recipe box, but I haven't tried it yet. Good luck!

p.s. sorry need to explain here. You need to make the bc a very deep yellow first. A light pastel shade won't work but coloring it a deep shade will. Also the background shade of the yellow needs to be warm or orangish not greenish. That is very important.

I don't know about mixing colors...but Wilton has a color called "pooh bear gold" I have used it and it is really pretty. This is the color:

O hun yeah the brown will work but it won't be near as vibrant as adding the violet. Compliments (color ones) always work great.

I use egg yellow to start with... it's got more of a brownish tint to it (like egg yolk).

Thanks for the help everyone... what I'm needing is the luster dust..pearl dust gold ALL OVER the cake..basically what you can make fondant look like.only I need it that shimmery deep gold for buttercream icon_confused.gif So far, I'm not thinking that's possible (I don't have an airbrush)..can you substitute a tool to get the same effect? TIA icon_smile.gif

I would wait til the buttercream crusts and then use a blush brush (not used of course on yer face) and gently dust the lustre dust all over.

I would still do a deep yellow and then brush on the gold lustre dust dry.

Well I have found that for me buttercream is kinda hard to brush the dust onto. Perhaps someone has had success with it. But I have dipped my brush and tapped it over the buttercream and kinda of did a sprinkling of gold. Just don't have too terribly much on your brush or it'll kinda clump onto the cake. Good luck.

Here is what I recommend you do and it is how I do it.
Yes, you can substitute an airbrush. Go to Home Depot and purchase a "Preval" sprayer out of the paint department for $3.98. Purchase Super Gold Luster Dust and either Lemon Extract or Vodka. Mix about 1 ounce of Vodka to 1 or 2 grams of your Dust in the jar that comes with the Preval sprayer. Swirl the mixture around good in the jar and spray the cake.
I have a Preval sprayer and I use it often and love it with a passion! icon_smile.gif
