I agreed to make a Jack and Jill shower cake where they want a flag draped over the cake. It will be 2 rectangle tiers torted with a custard filling. The flag will be made of Fondant, and the cake is to be delivered. I have never done a drape or a delivery before. DO I stack the cakes before I get there (the ride is about 30 minutes and my husband will drive while I watch the cake.) Also do I drape the flag onto it before I get there (if its assembled first) or wait till I get there. Also how do I keep the flag from drying out and cracking since I have to make it a day or two before? Can I wrap it in something like a shower liner to keep it moist? Would that work? Any help will be appreciated. This is my first BIG cake. Its for about 100 people, and my hope is that it will lead to me doing the wedding cake. (fingers crossed). Thanks. icon_smile.gif

I would definitely go for assembling after you get there! Your cake cracking is not worth putting the fondant flag on first. Fondant should be okay kept in anything air-tight. Maybe it could be wrapped in saran wrap? Or, if it's really big (and to cause much less trouble than trying to wrap the thing), do you have an air-tight container with a lid like for a sheet cake to keep it in? A shower liner could work as long as there's definitely no air getting in, and the flag should be just fine to drape on later!

My suggestion is to assemble on site and for the flag--Lay one piece of Glad press and seal down then flag then another piece of press and seal and seal all the edges and get rid of all the air.

I did a cake for Costco with a blk vest draped on it I stacked finished the whole cake then delivered I put a dowel through both tiers and put the drape on it delivering 2 tiers shouldn't be a problem as long as you drive properly and take the bumps and turns slowly the delivery was over 1/2 away also use a non slip mat in the box and under the box. I always stack my first 2 bottom tiers and assemble any other tiers that go on top on site. That Costco cake is in my photos has cookies on top spelling Costco.
