Hi everyone! I just received an airbrush for Mother's Day and could not be more excited....and clueless! Since the search function does not work so well right now could anyone who has airbrushed cakes show me some examples of things I am now able to do with my cakes??? I dont know where to start...
Is there a special kind of 'painters tape' to use to tape off some sections of a cake when spraying others like duff uses sometimes?
Is there any special place to get colors like gold and silver that acutally come out looking like shiny metal? Need to do a police badge and handcuffs soon and would love to have them look authentic..
Any tips or techniques would be sooooo appreciated! Please please please..... TIA
I too have an airbrush, but can't be of any help- have not used it much. But here is a bump for you!
Airbrush Advice 101:
1. Go to www.howtoairbrush.com and look at their lessons.
2. Buy Roland Winbeckler's book on airbrushing.
3. Buy any of Carol Faxon's airbrush books.
4. Practice, practice, practice!
And remember, it's fun, enjoy yourself!! ![]()
Airbrushing is fun. You can do a tye-dye patern, color the whole cake, put a little color around the sides before you put on a border, do grass and sky, the possiblities are endless. I have never used tape like Duff though. If I want a clean line I just lay a piece of card stock or firm paper on the cake and spray. Just remember to start and stop spray off of the cake and stay about 6 inches away from surface to avoid blowing holes in icing.

I have a few cakes I've used my airbrush on.....mostly I've used it to save me enormous amounts of time.....like my spongebob cake....I airbrushed squidwards house, the little flower thingies, the coral...I was able to switch out colors quickly and easily and didn't have to mix a million colors of chocolate.......I airbrushed my pirate cake, covered it all in white fondant (instead of spending enormouse amounts of time kneeding in brown color)......I LOVE my airbrush....I've also done some cc and such too
I recommend practicing a lot on paper... it will help you get the feel for the airbrush, and how much pressure you need to apply for different things.
