Basic Cake Stacking Question

I'm a beginner to cake decorating, so this is probably a very basic question...

If you're going to be stacking cakes in tiers covered in marshmallow fondant, how do you place one tier directly on top of the other without damaging the fondant on either layer? Thanks!!
