Ok guys... i need major Help. I am doing a cake for a friends daughter. She would like a little mermaid cake. I would like to do ariel, flounder, and the crab (forget his name) in color flow and put them on lolipop sticks standing up in the cake. I just tried to do ariel and it came out as one big blob! I am having trouble with the little details like her face and such. I am wondering if it is possible to do color flow with something with as much detail as the little mermaid and her crew have. In Wilton class 2 we did a small bird with no detail, so i am just not sure about this. I am hoping you guys can help me out with some suggestions?? I tried using the #2 tip like it says in wilton book but that was entirely to thick for the 3X5 pics i have. Then i Tried PME tip #1, but didn't know what to fill in with. Even #2 tip went over my outlines. Its such a mess! Hope i'm not in over my head here!

I did a sesame street cake in color flow. My suggestion is to get most of her body right -- like her head and body shape and pipe in the other features (like the fine details) in color flow -- after it's dried for at least 24 hours. Don't do the eyes and etc in color flow -- pipe those in last.

Hope this helps. (My Sesame Street cake in on the website - I just put it out there today if you want to take a look.)
Thanks!

Thank you so much for the help!!! It seems so obvious that you would pipe on the features later but, my poor overworked brain doesn't think in the obvious sometimes! BTW your color flow work is BEAUTIFUL and so are your cakes!

i think it may also be called sugar flow??? Or some call it flow ins. Similar to royal icing, except it dries harder and shinier.

pipe on all the body and fins and big stuff, get some of those wilton markers and draw on the tiny details. thats what i would do. I tryed doing arial a while ago , didnt turn out so good. her face looked awefull, next time ill do the markers.

I would stick with tip #2 for the outline if you don't want it to flow over the edges. If you have plenty of time for it to dry then you could make the color flow a little thinner than normal. Underfill it while you're working and let it spread out before adding more. You can also use a toothpick or pin to help push the color flow out towards edges and corners.

For details you could add them in later with color flow or those markers like someone mentioned or just paint it on with the gel colors. I remember doing that with the birds from class, we painted on the eye and the beak.
