How Many Cakes Can You Bake In A Home Oven At Once? I Did 4

I posted this within someone else's thread, but I see it is getting buried & not answered, so I'll ask it on my own! icon_smile.gif

Anyway, I made the WASC for the first time and used the flavored coffee creamer today. The cake was delish, of course, but it was very heavy and didn't rise as much as my other box cakes usually do.
I have never made such a big amount of cake batter before, which ended up filling two 10 inch cake pans and two 6 inch cake pans.

Which brings me to the question: was I not supposed to stick all four cake pans in my home oven to bake on the 325 called for? They all fit on one shelf, so I thought it was OK. I thought that could have made them so heavy and stick to the pan like crazy??

i've never made that much batter at once and i've never made the wasc cake. i do know that there should be room all around all the pans so that air can circulate and they can rise.

not sure about the sticking problem, but i'll bet that they didn't rise because there were too many pans in the oven.

It is a denser cake, and I bake that same amount (2-10inch, and2-6inch) just make sure to pull out the 6inch ones before the others.

I would always leave 1-2 inches of space between cake pans to allow air to circulate. If a recipe yields too much batter for 1 baking, I either cut the recipe in half or I cover one pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate while other is in oven.

I always heard that the rule of thumb is......at least 2 inches of space between any pans in your oven for proper air/heat circulation. It's the "rule" that I've always used.....for fear of what would happen if I didn't!

I always rotate my pans if I have them behind each other rather than just beside each other so that they bake more evenly to as the back part of the oven bakes differently than the front part,

I have only baked three small cakes at one time. Just like the others leaving enough space to bake evenly. I have done the WASC. They did rise just right for me. Including the creamer include.

I made a 9x 13", 3 4" and one 8" round in my oven (the 8" rose to almost 4" in height!!!) at the same time and no problems icon_smile.gif

They were all shoved on the same rack together, with no air space between them! I had no idea I should do that.
I hate baking. It's too hard! icon_cry.gif Where is my baker-fairy that bakes all my cakes and makes my frosting so all I get to do is decorate?

I don't know, but I wish I had your oven space! I can only fit at most 2 8in pans (and that's a squeeze!), a 9x13in pan or 12 hole cupcake tray on my shelves at one time, and I can only bake on one shelf as my oven is v.temperamental with it's heat! I'm currently baking 48 cupcakes, and that will take me about 1 1/2 hours of total baking time - I hate it!

I, too, wish I had your oven. I can only put in ONE cake pan at a time; a 12-ct cupcake pan or a small cookie sheet. I think that the person that built this house really wanted an Easy Bake Oven! icon_cry.gif

I try to NOT do big orders out of this kitchen, but I did have to do 30 of the new KING size Wilton cupcakes once and could only cook 6 at a time. Took me about 2.5 hours! It was a good thing that I started early. I did think that I would be able to put two pans in at once, but couldn't. I hate my oven! icon_evil.gif

You all can REALLY get two 10" and two 6" from the WASC recipe? I must be filling my pans too full as I only can get two 10's. What's your secret?

I was just thinking about the issue with the size of my oven! (I too can only just fit two 8" pans in and I think even they were too close - about 1" space between the pans and the oven walls! - as the cakes' edges were really cripsy!).

How big is everyone's oven? Mine measures just 17" across inside!

Exactly the same here, I think ours our standard European size!

Wow, I just measured the inside of mine and it is 24" across and 20 inches high! And it is just a regular size, nothing fancy oven. I didn't realize there was a difference in ovens depending on country! Weird!

Oh, and a pp asked about filling that many pans with the WASC, and like I said, it barely rose to the top of the pan. I would have liked it a bit higher, so I would try and do smaller cakes next time.
