I'm going to be looking soon to turn my garage into an additional kitchen. I've heard other people like to bake with gas, I currently use electric. Would like to have opinions, suggestions.

Thanks
Joanne

I've only had electric, all my adult life. I hate it. Bakes unevenly, every one I've ever had runs too hot. Have to make all kinds of adjustments to get a decent cake or casserole.

I really only like electric. I find the electric oven is fine but stovetop the heat is VERY uneven but I live with it. I don't like to light the pilot light when it goes out. I'm VERY, VERY, VERY afraid of it busting into flames everywhere. I wonder if there is phobia for this because I also don't like propane grills, hot water heaters, etc. But it not open flames in general because I love a campfire. Slow starting fires are just fine.

I use electric because cooking with gas or being in a house that has gas hooked up to it gives me a headache.

Only electric for me. I just got a new GE Spectra convection oven. I have an extreme fear of fire which is due to the fact that when I was in 6th grade several classmates of mine were at a club meeting at one members house and it was cold in the house and the dad and son went down to look at the furnace and when they lit the pilot the house exploded. I still have images of them coming to school with the gloves on protecting their skin grafts. Even to this day I can't light the pilot in the furnace and even have trouble lighting the gas grill I get very nervous every time I use the gas grill. If I could afford electric water heater and an electric furnace I would have it.

But the one thing about a gas stove is that when you turn the heat off it is off.

I use electric, but I have used gas before and I didnt like it at all. I had to keep it on 400 degrees the whole time and it still took forever to get my cakes done. So I would much rather have electric.

HI, I have two commercial electric convection ovens. I love them because they dont have to be vented out with a hood, (like gas) I do have them piped near a window so I dont cook myself in the summer.

I like the way they bake. I only use convection baking so I am not sure how conventional, heat from the bottom work.

Good Luck with your new venture. I hope it is great fun.

Andrea

I have a gas range stove top, but electric oven with a convection option (which I ususally don't use).

Common thought is that gas is better to cook wiht for a stove (more control) and oven should be electric b/c the heat is more even and consistent.

I really think its what you are used to. i have electric, but have had past apartments with gas, and use gas at work. They both have thier ups and downs, but as i said its what you are comfortable with.

We put electric into our new kitchen (cause my hubby didnt want the tanks outside of the house) if you have a line you can hook into that won't be an issue, but the price of filling those tanks sure will be. You need to think its more expensive to have a gas stove installed, then you have the price of propane to deal with, i really don't know if its any cheaper to use then the electric anymore. I do believe years ago it was cheaper, but thats something i would wonder about today.

Only gas for me. Had electric growing up and hated it. Both the oven and the stove. My mom still hates it but is used to it and too expensive to switch. I've never had an issue with the oven temp being off. Works perfect every time. I love it. thumbs_up.gif

Not that this will help you - but I have electric because that's what came with our house when we bought it and I can't have a new one till this one dies. (I'm trying to kill it and I am succeeding....wuuuhhhhahahahahaha!!!! icon_evil.gif

But - I can tell you that when gas ovens heat they produce a small amount of steam, which may or may not be good for cakes.

I think when it's time for a new oven, I will continue with electric. I will also make sure, BEFORE I buy, that it fits a 16" cake pan. icon_lol.gif

I have an electric stove now but would love to have gas. I've heard that gas ovens bake more even and simply better than electric.

I have a GE Spectra as well, and although I like my flat surface burners, I don't really care for the performance of the oven.

so, if you can get gas stove and oven, I would go with that rather than electric. Also, it is better when there are blackouts..

Especially here in Florida with all this darn hurricanes, gas is the way to go... thumbs_up.gif

I have had both and by far prefer the electric oven. If we were talking stovetop, that would be gas. We have a duel fuel now where the burners are gas (or in my case propane) and the oven is electric.
