i am pretty new at this whole cake thing (but am loving it and think i really have a knack for it) but i want to do a fathers day cake with a car on it. my hubby has a classic 62 convertible, i have drawn an outline but need to fill it in with silver color. i have only completed the first wilton course so it has to be buttercream icing... any suggestions on how to "color" the car in silver? the sprays by wilton don't come in silver, is there a dust or something?????????? help the dorky newbie??? LOL!

You're funny!! You can use silver luster dust, but you will have to go to a cake supply store or order it online. It's really the only realistic silver I have seen. I tried the Wilton silver sparkles, or whatever they're called, and it was quite horrible.

I'll offer a bump and hope some true professionals can offer some advice.

I did a plane in silver buttercream....used some black in the white icing...turned it grey.....thought "Yeesh, ok I'll do it blue instead". I added a tiny bit of blue and, VOILA! I had a really nice silver for the plane. If you want to look, it's in my gallery.

And yes, there is also the fact that you could add luster dust, too. This could give you a nice silvery base.

Hope this helps! icon_biggrin.gif and good luck!

Please post a pic when you're done. I'd love to see it.

I know that I've seen a recipe not sure, but here
it goes.
2 tbsp piping gel and then luster dust.

I just had to use silver on a wedding shower cake I did. I used the silver piping recipe on this site and it came out great.

For the knife in my bass cake I used white pearl dust a little lemon extract and a very small dab of black gel paste.
