You can find out just about everything you need to know about edible images on the internet. KopyKake.com is a good resource.
The printers really aren't that expensive, and you can usually find them on Ebay cheaper than anywhere else. The Icing sheets can be a little pricey though.
I have an Epson printer, and I love it. It really is alot of fun. The only problem is, When people found out I can do Photos, they tend to ONLY order edible image cakes!
Kroger in my area will do a picture for $7, and Walmart will do it for $5.
The only problem with a store doing it for you, is they won't do Copywrited material, such as Disney, Dora....etc.
You can pick up a printer on Ebay for 50-75 dollars usually, sometimes cheaper. Depending on which printer you buy, the cartridges can run anywhere from 40-80 dollars....and icing sheets usually run 26-28 dollars for 25 sheets.
I usually charge an extra $6 dollars for every Icing sheet I have to use to cover my costs.

The brand new Espon C88 is running for $79.99 (I just had to replace my desktop printer, so I was just there). when you factor in shipping/handling/etc, it's cheaper to go to a computer store and get one there.
My question is, how do you store your printer between projects? Do they clog up if you don't do printing daily? I've been doing a lot of these lately too, and the guy I get mine from has been having a heck of a time with his printer and he runs a business, so I know he uses his a lot (clogged jets). I probably won't look at getting my own till the fall since the school year is almost over and I do most of my treats with images on them for the kids in school, but I'm seriously considering it now that 3 will be in school full time and the youngest will be in pre-school. That's a lot of class parties to make treats for.
You all are AWESOME!!! I could not for the life of me figure out how they did it. I don't know if I will invest in the equipment, but knowing I can get it done at Walmart is some good info to have.
THANK YOU ALLLLLL SO MUCH!! I appreciate it. Hugs to each and everyone of ya

Sheila,
I bought an Epson cx3810 off of ebay for 55.00, shipping and all. I will admit I watched for about a week before I stumbled onto it, but it was worth the wait. If you are patient, you can find a good deal.
I have a Canon printer that I bought for my edible images. Between uses, I remove the cartridges and seal them in a ziplock bag. I also remove the print head and run hot water through it till clear, following suggested directions, then I dry it carefully and put it into a ziplock back with a couple of those desiccant packets to keep things dry. I have not done so very many of the edible images... my clients seem to prefer regular buttercream decor and design. I hope this info helps.
Good Luck! ![]()
No, it must be a brand new printer, which has never had any kind of ink through it. The ink for edible images is very special, made of food color.
I know there are special cartridges for the printers. I think if you go to one of the sites that carries the food safe cartridges, it'll tell you which brand printer's they'll fit. I hear a lot of ppl buy cannon or epson printers for them. I have not gone looking as I'm not in the market for that yet since I (personally) only do cakes for family and friends).
so can i buy just any new printer or does it have to be a special cake printer?
It just has to be a new, compatible inkjet printer. Canons are the best choice like the iP1500, iP3000 or MP130 ($50-$100). You can find the edible ink cartridges and frosting sheets at www.kopykake.com
