something like this maybe?

one layer (i've shown bottom) could be vet theme -- paw prints dog & cat mixed, silhouettes of animals)

one layer dance theme -- same idea silhouettes of dancers

either layer could be interchanged.

could add diploma to top layer

message on top of hex layers.

could add fondant figures of animals, dance shoes, etc.

black ribbon, real or fondant at bottom of each tier (tho' black pearls would be nifty too) and black string work on top tier

and of course LOTS more stars on wires! -- which, personally, would be covered in gold luster dust.

and could hit w/ all kinds of pearl / lusters dust all over to really make it sparkle!

9 inch middle hex = 20
15 inch bottom hex = 48

can use rounds that are a wee bit smaller (will have overhang at the points)
OR
can use larger round and trace shape of pan onto it and then cut to size.

well, I'd stick w/ the black on red theme and do cut-out in black. might look nice w/ touches of gold luster for accents.

as designed it's the crimson for the main frosting/fondant. then black accents. Can use gold luster on the cake itself. Stars would be yellow or gold --- gold being a nice substitute for the yellow.

when he has some to make! -- no orders coming in.

(and even then -- with work, well ---)

(and the next will most likely be yet another b-day one in Aug.)

but if (when) orders come in, I'll be sure to post them.

Hey...just thought I'd add my two cents in.
Doug's ideas sound great ...love the sketches and everything.
I just finished a grad cake on Friday and I posted the photo...I'll attach it here if I can figure out how to do that...otherwise it is in the photo gallery in the graduation cakes section. My cake is stacked rounds iced in golden yellow buttercream and I added fondant stars in red, blue and yellow on wires (kinda like Doug mentioned) except mine have edible glitter on them but luster dust would look nice too.
It may not be exactly what you want but I thought maybe it would give you some ideas.
