While sitting here typing away with my fingers, my little cakes are in the oven.

You know what happens too often? While reading this forum,
the oven continues. The cakes, if they had a voice, would call to me,
"Hey, it's hot in here!"

Forget about them and they burn.

Yeah, yes, I know. I can use a windup alarm. (I can't hear it.) I can bring into the office, ummm no.

I want a program that flashes on my screen.

Hey! Cakes Ready!

A timer and everything. icon_smile.gif

lol that would be great! Then we wouldn't have to worry any more about a cake being "Over Cooked"!!!

I've always dreamed of a candy thermometer that sounds an alarm when you hit 230 degrees or so for buttercream, so you can get back to the kitchen in time.

I gave up on the meat thermometer when I tried it a few times before. It's close, but off by 10 degrees or so...which is pretty useless for sugar. icon_mad.gif

I've pretty much timed it between 15-20 minutes for a double batch of boiling syrup for buttercream now, but I'd LOVE an alarm backup.

Any inventors out there want to make a million dollars off all these cake decorators???? icon_biggrin.gificon_rolleyes.gifthumbs_up.gif

Your Croquembouche looks very good, Antonia... Have you ever made sugar cups?

Handpressed sugar molds?

no, I do very little sugar work at all now.

I used to be a Pastry Chef at a restaurant where we did lots of weddings/corporate functions and did a lot more like piped sugar run-outs, caramelized decorations/sticks/dipping, etc. but now I just focus on cakes/cookies.

I have burned up my share of food including baked goods, by spending time on the computer. I finally got a kitchen timer that clips on to my shirt, it has a magnet on the back so it stays on the fridge until I need it. Even when I set the timer on my oven, when I'm in certain areas of the house, I cannot hear it. A great investment and less than $10.

Ummmm--

Most (if not all) computers have the lil' clock down there in the right hand corner of the screen--it lets you set an "alarm" on it and everything... icon_rolleyes.gif

And e-mail programs like AOL have an online "calendar" that will alarm for you at a pre-set time, too.

It's free, and it's already there in your computer. icon_cool.gif

Don't all ovens have timers on them? I know I would burn them every time if I didn't set mine.
Also, Microsoft Outlook has a great reminder system, if you have it.
