That is the same price that our local Kroger's has, but most of the time they have it on sale for $1 a box. When they don't, they will have Pillsbury or Betty Crocker on sale for $1 a box.
I never really thought much of it, I just get whichever one is on sale, but I do have my preferences, so I stock up when it is on sale.

I have found that cake mix prices differ from store to store, week to week. Wal-Mart seems to be the cheapest for me at .89 cents a box but they are limited to white, chocolate and yellow. I always stock up when they are on sale.

I am fortunate to have so many grocery stores within a short distance of each other. There are times when Wal-Mart and Kroger are buy one get one free, and you can get both for less than $2.

By me, the "normal" price of the cake mixes goes from $1.59 to $1.89 - that is still too high as far as I am concerned. Maybe because the price of sugar has gone up so much in the past year. I only buy on sale anyway and stock up on mixes.

I guess I'm lucky too. We have a grocery chain in the Cincinnati area called "Biggs Hypermarket" and they have pillsbury cake mixes on sale pretty often 2 for a dollar. I really stock up when they do that!

I just went to our local supermarket and stocked up today. DH mixes usually go for $2.29 per box but they were on sale for $ .90 each. Luckily they have a large variety too. Now I can start to practice/learn my decorating without feeling quite so guilty!

I usually buy from a grocery chain called Winco. They have either BettyC or Pillsbury for 78 to 99 cents each. I stock up when I am there. They also sometimes have C&H powdered sugar for 99 cents a 2lb bag. I stock up on that too!!!

But the BettyC at the major grocery store here is usually $2.59 per box!

I just can't bring myself to pay that.

Yikes...at all the grocery stores here the average price is $2.30 for a cake mix. I usually head to 99 Cents Only, or to Target, where they have them for $0.99.

How long can you keep a cake mix before using?? I like the stocking up idea, but never sure if the cake mix can go bad or little critters start to live in there.

Thanks

In my experience, the cake mix companies put a "best if used by" date on the box somewhere. I know for certain that Betty Crocker does. I stock up when they go on sale and put the farthest date in the back of the shelf and the ones expiring soonest at the front. thumbs_up.gif

PS: They never stay around that long, no matter the date.

sugar prices in the US are artificial . . .the US (and many other nations) sets price floors for sugar

I had to laugh though when I read the comment about cake mix prices being too high
