I was attempting to copy a beautiful cake by ddddeac .
Ugh, I had never used these before, and I got too close and then too far and it just looks like a nightmare. I am so horrified to bring this to the birthday party ( it is for the birthday of a friend of the family turning 13 )
This cake makes me just want to give up, ugh what an incredible waste of my day.

I don't think it's bad at all. I actually thought it looked very cheery. I'm starting to research my colors before I use them. I'm getting so many great ideas from color schemes on CC. I have also tapped into the Sherwin Williams (paint) website. They have a color finder. You can click a color, and it automatically shows you the other complimentary colors. I have been playing around with colors lately. I'm finding the best outcomes come from colors that were grouped together.

I'll bet your family/friends loved it. Don't be so hard on yourself...it's too easy to do. It's hard to browse CC all night, then stand there and judge our own work. We're always our toughest critic. I'll bet they were all impressed...and I'm sure they told you so.

I don't think it's that bad, but if you really dislike it why don't you add some designs to it. Maybe some flowers and trim. You may like it a little better.

Hey I think the cake looks fine
It just needs a lil more going on than the rainbow colors....throw on some accent buttercream roses and leaves in the appropriate colors....some pretty borders and I am sure youll be alot happier with your cake!

I also tried the wilton's color mist and felt the same way. I did not want to give the cake to the buyer so, I covered it up with some designs and it was a whole lot better. I was so happy when I purchased my airbrush machine.

Don't be so hard on yourself. If you don't like it that much then you could add some fondant stripes or circles. Those cover up many places on my cakes that I've done and didn't like how areas looked.

I do think I would add a boarder though.

But as far as the colors go I don't think it looks bad in the photo. It reminds me of a tie dyed t shirt. I like it.

I used those color mists on my DD's ccc and they can be a little tricky at first but you can quickly get the hang of them. As for your cake, I like it. It reminds me of a tie-dyed shirt. I think the 13 year old will like it too. Don't be so hard on yourself. You did a good job. thumbs_up.gif

Make that your background! Pipe some big funky "flower power" flowers scattered around, a big chunky border and you'll have a fabulous cake!

I am not vey good at using those spray icings either, but it's like that saying "pratice makes perfect". I think it looks pretty good. Don't give up if cake decorating is something that you enjoy and are passionet about it. We are our own worse critics.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Apparently the cake shifted around a bit on the ride there last night. I haven't seen it since, and I might not make it to the party before the cake is cut. Oh well, It should taste good lol
I just was sooo frustrated last night when I posted that, my husband was breathing down my neck almost the entire time, telling me I need to hurry up and quit trying to smooth it,yada yada. Ugh it was just a bad cake night. Hopefully the next one will be better. I have seriously considered giving up cakes and just doing cupcakes recently because those seem to be the only things that turn out right when I decorate them. Oh well, live and learn, I'll try again another day.

I learned from experience too that the color mist can get away from you quickly if you aren't used ot it. I think you still did a greta job though.
