It definitely does. Especially red.

Did you use Americolor? I have the best luck getting a dark color with their colors. Also, not a bitter taste in the red icing.

Let it sit for a little while and see how it looks. Sometimes I put some on a spoon and leave it on the counter so I can check it periodically as I walk by.

Good luck.

Yes, I am using Americolor X-mas Red. The only one I have. Thanks for the advice!!! Maybe now is the time to walk away for a bit. Should I cover with plastic wrap? It's the BC dream recipe. Thanks again!!!

I haven't had experience with the americolor X-mas red but.... My wilton christmas red was this dark pink and I needed it for McQueen! I thought okay---maybe I will add a tiny bit of blue.... icon_redface.gif I got the most beautiful Raspberry sherbet color!

Hopefully yours will turn red! Don't add blue whatever you do!!! icon_lol.gif

Noosie,

Sorry you're having trouble, but red is one of those colors that is tough to get a great color in. I do try to let my stronger colors sit a while before I determine whether or not to add more color; it's more a "feel" than anything, I think.

I have heard of other people adding cherry Koolaid to their icing first, that may help you (and it makes the icing taste yummy).

You could also try to color your white icing a dark pink first, then add the red, which may help to intensify the color without making it too nasty-tasting.

Lastly, when all else fails, ice your cake in the darkets red you can manage, then overspray with an airbrush or the cans of red color spray that Wilton and others have put out. Then do your decorating over that.

I know this may not help you, but it might not be such a bad idea ...

HTH,

Odessa

I have used the Wilton Christmas Red, and I wasn't happy with that colour at all! To make it deeper, I added a touch of black, and that worked well. I hope you can work it out!!!

I am actually in the middle of this exact situation. I have a spiderman cake due on Saturday. I made the icing using Americolor super red on Wednesday..let it sit over night. Then just prayed it would get darker. It started out dark pinkish...definitely not spidey red. Added some more super red on yesterday and suddenly it happened. It got red!!! I almost used the entire bottle. Don't give up. I'm frosting the cake today. I'll post pictures.

Whenever a customer mentions red....I cringe!

I tell ya, what a small world!!! Thnx luvcakes!! My cake is for tomorrow, at this point do you think I should ice the cake with what I have and hopefully when I wake up in the morning my red will be there icon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gif . I added a touch of black as advised and it looks like a muted fushia now. So confused but I really want to get moving with this cake. BTW thank you all for the help and advice!!! Always know I have a shoulder to lean on when the caking gets tough thumbs_up.gif

Try a touch of cocoa powder (or brown coloring) - sounds like you've got too much blue going on.

I would probably try to test a little of the icing with more of the red...see if that gets redder, if it does, then try that on the entire batch. I wouldn't ice the cake yet if the icing color is still too pink. You don't want to get it on the cake and not be able to "undo" it. I guess you could always put another coat of icing on top of it. I would just play with it a little more. Let it set up over night...if you have time or at least a couple hours and then go for it. It will get darker. If you look at my firetruck cake, that icing started as dark pink. I just kept playing with it until it got darker. I also used some Wilton's no taste red for that cake. Couldn't have a fushia fire truck!!!

Don't stress...

I usually mix my red and let it sit for a day or two, the color does get darker and more vibrant. I have used the Wilton No Taste Red and have gotten a true red, it did take a lot of the coloring. Pretty much the entire jar.

I don't think you should start adding more colors to it just yet, that may ruin it.

Just add a bit more red and wait a little while (I usually see the difference in less than an hour). Sometimes it takes quite a bit of color.

I wouldn't add black and brown, etc. - you don't want a burgundy or terra cotta Spiderman thumbsdown.gif

Just have a bit of patience and stick with the red and you should be fine.

Good luck.

Hi Noosie! I can so relate to your dilema. The first time I had to make a red cake (the red Power Ranger). I had to keep adding and adding red color and it still looked dark pink to me. I just did the cake anyway and the next morning the cake was Red! Yay! My daughter kept saying are they gonna pick up the pink ranger? icon_cry.gif DON'T say pink! LOL It was red, though... Now I just get it as dark as I can and it dries or crusts red. Sometimes I have that problem with orange if it's a big amount of orange I need...

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to say thanks for all your help and advice re: the red bc. Attached is a picture of Spidey, which did in fact turn red!! However I posted today under cake disasters with the heading "OMG Red tongues every where I look" I got my red alright and so did all of the birthday guests!!!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

All kidding aside, I think all the coloring did effect the taste of the BC. My hubby said cake was great but bc had bitter after taste. I requested in the other post if anyone has a great crusting bc recipe. I found the bc dream a bit sweet for my taste and have a 3D pikachu cake for this weekend. Any help or recipes will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!!!

I use the Wilton no-taste red. No one's ever complained about the tase, either. I was reading some of the other posts on your thread. I wonder how that Kool-aid in the frosting works and tastes icon_confused.gif I think I might give that a try as well. I've been on a kick wanting to try everything I read on Cake central. I may rot all my family's teeth before I'm done testing on them! icon_lol.gif

Wow! Your cake looks awesome! Did you carve it?

Wilton does make a no taste red. It works pretty well but you do use the whole container!

[quote="gabbenmom"]Wow.! Your cake looks awesome! Did you carve it?

Thnx gabbenmom - No I didn't carve it. I used the styrofoam head as instructed in the tutorial. I did trim some of the harder edges around the shoulders and chest area as also instructed in the tutorial. It was alot of fun, but the webbing did take longer than expected.

Your cake looks great!!!

When I did my Spiderman, I just iced him white and airbrushed him. I don't like to use too many dark colors to base ice a cake because kids get their little hands in it, and it ends up staining tablecloths and clothes, etc.

Your spidey looks awesome. I will definetly try the styrofoam head soon! I had to make an Elmo cake a few months ago and used the wilton no taste red. I had no trouble getting a true red for Elmo. It did take a lot of the color though.
