use a piece of foam between your hand and the fondant to attach the fondant to the cake. that way you wont flatten the design.
Yesterday on good morning texas, bronwen weber covered a small rolling pin with the mesh that you find around certain vegetables, it made a pretty design on the hat cookies she was making.

Hi zubia!

According to all the things I've read while learning everything I can about fondant and gumpaste, you don't use a fondant smoother if you have an embossed pattern on your fondant. You just use your hand to gently pat the fondant into place. I like sweetcakes' suggestion about the foam, that seems as though it would work even better than just your hand. Great suggestion about the mesh sweetcakes!! I'm going to try that very soon!!

Thanks .I did try texture once. But it was for the cake board .I put my lace scarf on the fondant and pressed my rolling pin over it .It looked really cool .I'll try the mesh one soon.

Don't use the smoother, definitely use your hand. And try not to stretch it out too much when putting it on the cake because it can deform the design a bit. They are lots of fun to play with though!!! I got some from cakesbysam and from country kitchen. have fun!!
