I need to do any australian flag cake for next weekend, am thinking i should make the flag separately in sugarpaste as a plaque and then put onto the cake instead of icing the cake in the flag.

Need some help and directions!!

I'd make a rectangular cake and cover it in royal blue fondant and use fondant as the Union Jack and southern cross etc, just colour the fondant, roll it out cut it and glue it on with sugar glue.
