My only tip (hence my messy, MESSY kitchen after baking a cake tonight!) is to get a really wonderful DH or SO that is soooooo grateful for cake and icing leftovers that cleaning the kitchen is a delight for them!

Seriously!

My DF helped me (I am sick right now)
1. mix and bake cake
2. mixed frosting by hand since my mixer broke last week!
3. he does ALL crumb coating
4. told me how wonderful the cake looked, and that the cake cracking and the top half sliding off really only added to the stormy sea cake idea (it was a "Port in the Storm" lighthouse cake for his sister)
5. carried the cake the whole way in the car trying to keep it from sliding any more
6. actually ate chocolate cake (he hates chocolate!) once it was cut to show me how good it was!
7. will clean kitchen and do dishes tomorrow while I rest from all my "hard work"

All this in exchange for leftover frosting bags! You gotta get yourself one of these.
