Hello all--I am now down to the wire with this Elmo cake--party tomarrow! I have had problems with getting red icing. I was unable to buy the Americolor(no time to order and ship it) But all I have in this town is wallie world. I have added 6--1 ounce bottles of red--red jello-red koolaid--and been 4 days--and still have pink icing!!! ANY IDEAS??? I also wrote wilton concerning this--reply?? add 1/2 bottle of 1 ounce of red to 3 cups icing-makes red! LOL !(undoubtably they didn't read that I had added 6 bottles!) So--if anyone has an idea--I sure could use it!!! Thanks so much in advance! Also--the icing taste great!(cherry!)
hummm, what type of red are you using? I know I have had to add quite a bit to get red, but I don't see why you have added 6 bottles and it is not working? Also, have you tried letting some dry? The red will get darker as it dries. Spread a little on a plate, let it dry, and see if it seems red enough. Do you have a picture?
OMG That's horrible! My only suggestion would be to maybe buy some red icing from Walmart. I know, you may hate the thought of buying your icing rather than making it from scatch, but I'm afraid that if you add anything else to it you run the risk of ruining it completely! Wow!! Next time Pm me sooner and I will personally send you a bottle of the Americolor Super red!!
Good Luck ![]()
Are you using Wilton Icing Colors (the concentrated paste), or a liquid food coloring from the baking aisle (like McCormick)??? I wouldn't think it would take that much if it's the concentrated. I have used the cherry Koolaid in mine before and it did help, but I also had to add more color. You're right about the taste too. Yum! Don't know what else to tell ya except that if your using the liquid dye, you may have to start over with the concentrated. Sorry I couldn't help more but at least this will give you a bump so maybe someone else will answer ya!!
she is using wilton. She said that she already contacted wilton concerning this. I am wondering if you are using the big ones, or the small ones. Also are you using the no taste, or the regular. I would not buy the red from wal mart, IMO very bitter.
I see other people were responding the same time I was...Good!!! Also was thinking...I just did a cake the other day and the icing still looked too light when I pulled it out of the fridge, but once I stirred it...Wow, it was plenty dark. So maybe try stirring it up to see. Also if you redo it, Start by coloring your icing a hot pink and then add red. I've heard that helps but I have not tried it. Good Luck!!
how pink is it? LOL
only asking because red and black NEVER look red and black to me... I am always disppointed when they're in the bowl or when I color fondant.. but once they go on the cake... it always looks great for some reason... I don't know if it's after the icing sets or something.. but if you're close I would go for it and you will probably be pleasantly surprised.
I wouldn't add more coloring at this point.. with that much in there already you may have some staining issues on hands and faces.
good luck!!!!
OK--let me tell ya---I started with pink icing--then ended up adding 6 bottles--1 ounce of the concentrated kind from wilton--no taste red & red red-even added 1 box jello (for red color) and 1 package of cherry koolaid (for color). AND ended up with a lovely color of pink! (been working with this for 3 days--so it isn't the waiting time) I have lots of red colored things in kitchen now--but not the icing! LOL ! Sooooooo----I solved this problem----quess how??? I went to a local grocery store--they were decorating with red letters for Mother's Day (on cakes for sale) and they sold me some red--the color of Elmo!!!! I told them-that if they would just sell me 2 large cups of red icing--I would pay the price of one cake! They didn't charge me that much but I feel soooo lucky now!! LOL ! What a relief! Now my only grandson will have his first birthday Elmo! I will try to post pics of the cakes after this week end. And I want to thank all for their wonderful help and encouragment on this cake!!! THANKS !!!!!
