Hi, I am going to be doing my first cake made with cupcakes in a few weeks and was wondering how you ice the tops so they look connected. I was wondering if you level the tops of the cupcakes?? I am going to be putting a FBCT on top of the cupcakes. Any advice on that?? Thanks everyone! You're awesome!
I just started icing, plopped a couple good icing dollops around and smoothed. I didn't think about securing them, that would probably be a good idea.
Skittles, if you check out the article on FBCT, d. Griffin (author of article) is using cupcakes on praticially all of the tutorial. Maybe the pictures in the article can give you a little help. They helped me ![]()
You must stagger the cupcakes so they are as close to each other as possible.
I level mine simply by pressing a cookie sheet over them the minute they come out of the oven.
I also use the icing tip. Starting out the outside edges of the design. Then smooth it all.
Some people put borders around it, and some don't.
THis is a great tutorial:

Doesn't the frosting go down between the cupcakes?

No, it doesn't. there isn't really any space as long as you stagger them.
Make a straight row of cupcakes, and the second row buts up into the spaces.
Littlelinda is correct. I also put a cookie sheet on top of the cupcakes to make them all level then I stagger them to make the design that I am looking for. I use the icing tip and then smooth out the icing. I have done several of these and have one I am doing tonight. I love doing them. ![]()
