What is the difference between fondant, mmf and gumpaste?
Could someone explain this to me, I'm new at using fondant.
Also, is it really necessary to add gum-tex to fondant to help it be more moldable?
fondant is made of sugar, gumtex, all kinds of stuff.......basically fondant is soft and pliable can be used to cover a cake , mold figures, basically a ton of stuff and it will harden somewhat when left to dry out...however it won't become rock hard....MMF is just marshmallow fondant made with marshmallows and powdered sugar, very easy to make (highly recommend you try it) and tastes way better than the fondant wilton tries to sell you.....it acts basically the same as wilton's fondant in its many uses.......gumpaste is similar to fondant in the fact that it's pliable but it dries out quickly and gets very hard when it's dry this is better for making flowers and things that you might want to roll it very thin but have it be sturdy once it's dry. Gumpaste is 100% edible but it's really hard and most people don't think it's all that tasty......(my family can't keep their hands off my gumpaste flowers when I make them though LOL) Hope that helps
Edited to say: oh and adding gumtex to the fondant doesn't necessarily make it more moldable it makes it dry harder kinda like gumpaste. Fondant on it's own doesn't dry REALLY hard, just firms up a bit. But the gumtex is what's in gumpaste and it makes it get much harder which is desirable when you're molding figures and things because they don't slump over and such...makes them dry faster too.
Thank you KHalstead!
I get it now, what I'm making is ballet slippers, so it looks like maybe I should try MMF instead of Fondant. Do I need to add anything to the MMF to make it a little hard? I don't need it rock hard just stiff so the slippers stay formed well.
Thanks for your help.
