Cake Idea Already Need Help (Little Long)
Decorating By nursekim Updated 7 Jun 2006 , 9:08pm by nursekim
I have figured out what kind of cake my daughters and I can make their dad for father's day. This will be my second decorated cake. I have the idea in my head I just need suggestions. My idea is to make a tool box. I had thought about making a 9X13 cake and cutting it in half and putting finlling in between the halves to make it taller. That whole thing will be the tool box. I then want to use icing or something to make it look like jores on the front of the cake. I would love to make a few tools and have them hanging out of the jores. Maybe have a bottom jore that is open. I would like to make him spice cake that is his favorite. Could I use the box cake or should I make home made. What type of icing should I use and any suggestions to make the jores look realistic.
Thanks,
Kim
You can use box cake or scratch, it's really a matter of personal preference. You said your husband likes spice cake, does he have a favorite recipe or is there a box mix he really likes?
I would try fodant for accents on the tool box like the drawers and a handle on top. You would probably have to make a second cake, but you could cut a strip of cake and put it in the front of the tool box to get the open drawer effect. You could also use fondant to make some tools.
I know this is only your second cake, but you could also try covering the whole cake in fondant, not just the accents.
Have fun!!!!

That sounds good! Just make the bottom layer longer so that it sticks out like a drawer. Box mix is fine if that is what you are comfortable with. Buttercream or fondant would work well to decorate. You might try making the tools out of royal icing so they can stick up out of the drawer. Get a picture of a simple toolbox and use it to add details.
If you go to the galleries and type "Tool box" in the search bar, there are 9 cakes shown. It always helps me to see an example, even if it's different from what I have in my head.
for the tools, make a batch of marshmallow fondant and let the kids sculpt the tools out of it. (It's like working with edible playdough). You can have a few of the real tools out so the kids can look at them while they sculpt. That way they don't have to be perfect and it will mean so much more to your hubby. Plus, they get the pride of doing it themselves. This is a cute theme! Please post a picture when you're done!
You can buy several brands on-line at a variety of stores. The premade fondant can be a bit pricey. I prefer Satin Ice. Others like pettinice and FondX. There are also several recipes on this site. I like the MMF best and it's cheap to make. ( Marshmallow Fondant ) I have to agree, it is almost like playing with playdoh! ![]()
You can make your own with marshmallows (MMF)- Yummy!

Can I use just icing for the tool box then fondant for the tools ect. Is there a good recipe for white icing. I usually buy the one already made.
Thanks for the fondant recipe. Oh yeah can you add chocolate to the fondant? Also, I bought a cake leveler at Wal-Mart is this very helpful in making a layered cake. I am terrible at cutting a cake in half. Do you think I will need one 9X13 cake or 2.
Thanks,
Kim
