My kids have been bugging me to make cookies, so I decided to make a batch last night. I really like the taste of Penny's the one time I made it (I don't do cookies that much), so I figured I would make them again.

Well, I don't know what I did wrong. The batter came together, but looked a little soft. Perhaps my butter was too soft. So I added a bit more flour ... about 1/2c - 1c (I didn't measure).

As usual, I rolled it out between two sheets of parchment paper. Seemed to roll fine. I put the sheets in the refrigerator to firm up a bit.

Well, to make a long story (and night) short, the cookies could not be moved once cut. They would break apart no matter how carefully I was moving them. Sort-of crumbled. The only way I got them to work was to freeze the sheets (rock hard), and then cut the cookies and move them to the baking sheet while still frozen. It took me forever to make those stupid cookies.

They baked fine, and taste fine. They were just horrible to work with.

Any advice? I'm not crazy about the NFSC recipe. The one time I made it they were totally tasteless. Is this normal for this recipe?

I'm sorry! How disappointing! I do not know anything about Penny's recipe, but I'd assume it had somehting to do with too much flour. Give NFSC another try...I love it! I add a different flavor than it calls for, though- I do 1tsp. vanilla, 1/2 almond and 1/2 orange. I love the taste ,and so do all of my customers!

I agree with the NFSC. Add lemon, orange or almond along with the vanilla and they will taste great. I've also used the Penny's recipe but didn't have the problem you had. Maybe it was too much flour. I hope you will give them a try again. They are tasty!

I have a really great recipe for sugar cookies that has cream cheese in it. They have never failed for me, the dough is easy to work with, and they taste GREAT! They are the only sugar cookies I make. I've iced them both with buttercream and with royal icing. One recipe makes a huge batch. You can flavour them with whatever you like.

I'd be happy to share if you're interested.

I've never tried this recipe for cookie bouquets, since the cookies are tender, but I'm thinking I will try it and see.

I do 1 tsp vanilla, 1/2 tsp almond, 1/2 tsp butter flavor in my NFSC's. I also add a tsp of cinnamon in with my dry ingrediants. Yum!!
