I LOVE this site and I visit it so much more often than I probably need to since there are so many things I need to get done. But I don't understand why some of us feel the need to make catty remarks to one another. Why we have to bash grama_j for needing to "vent". My father whom I adored more than life itself, died last year of lung cancer and I loathe smoking. And I too feel that I can taste it in food and I hate even walking in a store and coming back out with the smell on my clothes and in my hair. It only reminds me of what caused a very slow and painful death for my father. But we are all just human and we don't know the complete circumstances. If the customer had ordered things and cancelled in a rude way and grama_j had already had a trying day, I can certainly see why she would need to vent to her friends here at cake central. Believe me, I do know that everyone has made very valid points and I know she will take them into consideration but a lot of times I am afraid to post on here because I'm not sure that everyone will use empathy when regarding every situation.

I'm sorry you lost the cake after you had already bought supplies but I agree with the majority. I am a non-smoker and try my hardest not to be exposed to smoke - AT ALL. Even if your husband doesn't smoke around you while you're baking the smoke and the smell is still there. Please don't be offended but smoke (and the smell) is a big deal for someone who makes the choice not to smoke. I do not allow any visitors to my home to smoke in my house, in the garage or anywhere near the front or back of the house. I don't do it and I don't want to be around it at all.

I agree dsoutherngirl.

Sometimes we may not all realize. Grama was upset. Regardless of the reason, her post to releave herself from her frustrations probably caused her even more frustration than the cake being canceled in the first place. We need to realize that when we have personal views that are valid and strong as the views on this thread are, they should be put into a new post, not heaped upon someone who just wanted to come on here to feel better. If I recieved this kind of response to a post, I would certainly be weary of posting the next time I was upset. In the future we need to take others feelings into accound. I am not saying not to express your opinions, just to do it in a seporate thread so as not to make the original poster feel worse instead of better.

I agree with dsoutherngirl and mushbug9 for the most part but I also believe that certain topics (smoking for example) are instant triggers to incite heated debates. I feel extremely bad that she lost the cake after supplies were bought and I sympathize there BUT I have no sympathy for the reason the cake was lost. Nothing good comes out of smoking period.

again...I disagree....Im not looking for trouble.

As I understand venting...and needing to vent...what I dont understand though is trying to justify how baking around smokers is ok but licking a finger isn't....truth is....they are no different. Both are clearly unsanitary.

venting about losing the order is one thing.......but defending an unsanitary situation is another.....and with that you are going to get conflict. and by disrespecting this woman because she chose to cancel an order made in way she is against is going to cause conflict with those who agree smoking should be no where near baking....

I agree that if you did witness an unsanitary action in the Walmart bakery...report it...say something to the person themselves.....but why bash all of walmart bakery employees??

I agree, if you are in a walmart/sams/put restaurant name here and you see them licking their fingers or breaking other sanitary rules, I would report it. Not only to the store manager, but to the health department. Its not to get them in trouble, but to help protect the rest of us, who are trying to obey all the laws. Also, as a consumer, *I* would want to know if my food is safe!

It is also your rights as a consumer to ask that person to put on gloves if they are handling your food. You never know where their hands could have been!

I didn't read any responses to your post, since this topic is already 3 pages long, so I'm sure that someone said this before...

As for the person LICKING THEIR FINGERS: you need to report that person. That is soooo disgusting. They should be wearing gloves, and especially, they should be keeping their hands out of their mouth. That is so sick!

I would report them. That's just unsanitary, creepy, and unprofessional. Yuck.

Thank you to all who actually READ my post, and the responses I gave, and understood it was NOT about smoking, but about a NASTY client that was trying any excuse she could to get out of paying for this order.....
YOU people made it into a "SMOKING"thread...... Going back through the thread, I see many people used my post to further their own adgenda, without a thought as to what it was really about........Some even twisted my words to fit THEIR answer......... I'm sorry to hear that, because although I am new to this board, I thought it was much more friendly than it is.......... I guess that goes under the heading of you learn something new everyday.........
