I started a year ago and although I am not very good in my own opinion I get compliments from everyone and I just keep practicing and I learn something new with every cake I do!
I have been tinkering and making cakes since I was about 8 years old, but I didn't break down and take any courses until about a year ago.
I really learned alot from the wilton courses, but I think I've learned more from this site! I still have a long way to go, but I'm loving every minute of it!

with me since 1994, right after my wedding..The lady that made my wedding cake inspired me so much that I got into it.
I am not in the business.. I do them when I want to. I do a lot of reading and experimentation, and trial and error. I do a lot of research if there is something that I want really bad about cake decorating. ![]()
I have been decorating cakes for almost 20 years. I took the Wilton Course I to improve my skills when my son was a baby, and I began making cakes for him. Other moms saw my work and wanted me to do cakes for them. My son is 18 now, just graduated from high school, and cake #1800 is not far away. I didn't do many cakes the first few years but gradually increased, and now I average 15 to 20 cakes per month. And this year, after all these years of saying "No, sorry, I don't do weddings" I have decided since my son is going off to college, I will now do wedding cakes. Wish me luck!

I was just looking at your website, great cakes! I especially love the candle ones. They are too cute for a sheetcake! Anyway, where on EARTH do you store all those pans!?! And where did you get them all?!
As for myself, I started 3 years ago, when my grandmother wanted to take a wilton class, and asked me to go with her. I was pregnant with my 3rd child, and it was a great break to be there. I discovered how stress relieving cake deco was for me. I took slacked somewhere in between the 3 years, and was buying grocery store cakes, but I have rediscovered the world of cake decorating since. I am here to stay. lol

I took classes at a local cake decorating store about six months ago. I really enjoy decorating cakes. I was always baking and cooking before. Then one day I wanted to take it further. My cakes from class was sent to my son's school, father's work and my husband's work. From there I started getting orders. About two months ago I started averaging three to five cakes a week, and when I have to turn one down I get upset. I want to do them all.
The more cakes you decorate the more practice you get. I love trying new techniques. So, I'm always searching for new ideas on the internet and new books in the stores.
Good luck to everyone.
I have some pictures of cakes I did in the late 90's but I really get 'addicted' to cake decorating in 2000 or 2001. Which is when I first started talking the Wilton Classes.
I started when I joned this site.. what, around september 05? I think? Self taught with lots of help from this site.

I have been collecting pans for the entire time I have done cakes. I have found them in flea markets and yard sales, thrift shops and classified ads in the paper. And in the last few years, I have found a lot of rare ones on eBay. I am sure I spent too much on a few of them, but a quest is a quest!
In our laundry room, my DH installed floor-to-ceiling shelves which hold large plastic Rubbermaid storage bins, 4 to a shelf, 32 bins in all. Each bin holds about 20 character cake pans, some more, some less. The bins are sorted, for example, by individual holidays or superheroes or things, like a guitar or a shoe. I'd never find anything if they were not sorted well. While it is a "working collection" I have only used about 1/3 of all my pans, so far.
We no longer have a dining room because it is now the storage room for all my wedding cake stuff. All my duplicate character pans (about 50) are in there, too. Cake decorating has taken over our lives, or at least a couple of rooms in our house. And I love it!
Thank you for asking! ![]()
