Any ideas on how to make a wood grain look on a buttercream iced cake. The buttercream is a crusting buttercream. I am trying to make it look like a board that I am going to put a fondant fish on. icon_biggrin.gifusaribbon.gif

I've made wood grain on my Narnia cake, but it is really dark, so you can't really tell in pics. Anyway, I started out with the brown and then smoothed it just a bit, went back with a toothpick dipped inbrown paste and gently made lines in the icing. then I went back and smoothed it all the way so the brown lines would blend better. I hope this helps.

I've also seen the impression mats in "wood grain," if you could/want to get your hands on one.

I, too, used an impression mat on my "tools" cake. But I still went back and used a straight edge to enhance the lines, so I think you could just use the straight edge by itself. Make all the horizontal lines, and then go back and make vertical lines (to make the ends of the "boards") but space them out so you don't end up with a grid pattern instead.

Hope that helps!

I had to make a board once and I used brown BC and ran a toothpick through brown coloring and made "grains' in the icing to resemble the grains in the tree but most important are the knots dont forget the knots for a realistic look, for those I used a cotton swab.
