Hi,
I need help re-creating my in-laws wedding cake for their 50th anniversary. I'm attaching a picture. It's not very good, but it's the only one I have. It's a surprise party, so I can't ask them what was on it. I'd appreciate any help I can get. I need to know what type of borders you think it has on it, or what you would do to make a similar cake. What do you think it has on the sides of the cake? It looks kind of like scrolls to me or rosettes, but I'm not sure. What do you think is in the middle? Bells and flowers maybe? Please let me know what you would do, or if you have any pictures of cakes that might be similar that I can copy.
Thanks,
Renae

If any members have any of the old Wilton cake decorating books (I have 1967 and 1969), you may find something similar.

To me, it looks like rosettes on the sides and plastic bells on the top. I've had to do 2 of these from old photos now, and I can completely relate to the guess-work!

Both times, the couple said, "We're too old to remember what it looked like anyway!"

Good Luck!

I agree that it looks like rosettes and those little plastic bells. Truth be told, they really probably won't remember exactly what was on their cake....I can't remember and mine was only 10 years ago!

I don't know if this helps any. I tried to enhance it but it's not much better. Maybe if I had a high resolution scan I could do more...

It looks like really large scrolls on the side to me.

Check your local library for Wilton Method III book of decorating. It's got alot of really neat borders (which aren't used too much these days.)

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Jenn123, thanks for the enhancement, I can see the sides better on it, but I still can't tell what the border is. I have a high resolution scan, but I didn't think I should post it that way. If you think you can help, I can send it to you in a different format and high res.
Tat, I wish my library had that book, but unfortunately, it doesn't.
If anybody else has some ideas on the borders, please let me know. I can just wing it, but I'd really like a nice border and I just can't come up with anything on my own.
Thanks again,
Renae

The border looks like it may be a tip 401, or a 402 to me (sort of like a ruffle, but not quite. I definitely agree with the bells. I think the sides are rosettes too.

The middle border around the top tier kind of looks like a wide shell tip done in an "open braid" if that makes sense.

The borders look like a double row of the shell border, side by side. One along the top of the cake close to the edge. The other on the side of the cake close to the top edge. Does that make sense?

I'd say rosettes on the sides, plastic bells and maybe a larger star tip (21 or similar to create a ruffle border with a zig zag motion. It's hard to tell though! I'm sure your in-laws will love and appreciate anything you do!
