Help! I am starting the Wilton Fondant course tomorrow evening and have been given a FULL page list of supplies I must purchase and bring. Luckily, I have a few of these already, but some of them are starting to add up fast.
She lists the 19 inch fondant roller to be brought, do I really need this size or will the smaller (much cheaper) size work? I will buy what I have to, but trying to scratch up money for this course. So far have spent almost $75.00 on the class and trying to hide this from my DH!!!! icon_redface.gif
Suggestions will be greatly appreciated. ACMoore is running 25% off in my area this week, but out of rollers. Michael's will not take the ACMoore coupon (!!!!)...I tried and not sure if it was just the salesperson or new policy on ALL things Wilton. Oh well....help

The smaller one will work fine. Down the road you may want to buy the larger one. I have it and like it.

Michaels' is getting wierd with their policies. I don't know whats going on with them. But, sometimes it is the cashier.

Call and ask, it wouldn't hurt.

You think you're spending money now, your in for a shocker.

You could use the smaller one but it will be a lot of extra work on you. Could you maybe borrow someone's bigger roller in class?
And yes, it really does add up! Thought I was the only one that "hid" stuff from my husband icon_lol.gif

I use my large roller everytime I cover a cake in fondant. However, since money is being funneled icon_lol.gif you can go to Home Depot or any other hardware store and purchase a piece of PVC Pipe in any length you want it. It works well and will suffice until you can funnel a bit more un-noticed $$.

And to think I was the only one funneling $$ from dh!! icon_surprised.gificon_eek.gif

My husband spends more money on cake decorating supplies then I do. I love taking him to the cake shop.

I would use a PVC pipe as suggested or I use a rolling pin. I have an OXO Good Grips rolling pin from Bed, Bath, and Beyond that I love and use everytime I roll out fondant.

They just want you to buy the Wilton supplies for the course (obviously). Be creative! Step outside the box icon_smile.gif

You gals are too funny icon_biggrin.gif ! I was fortunate to receive my initial supplies a month ago for my birthday. Gift cards are wonderful when they are to the craft store for cake supplies. So now I am actually having to buy stuff...bummer!
I guess I will bite the bullet and buy the big one. I just wanted to make sure it is something I would need/use! I just hope I can figure out the ins and outs of fondant, because you ladies make it look so beautiful!
Thanks for the input...it has helped!

The smaller roller is really only good for rolling out small pieces of fondant or gum paste for decorations & flowers.

In order to roll out a piece of fondant to cover even a 6x4 cake, you need the larger roller because you are rolling a piece of fondant that is 14 inches across. To roll that with the smaller roller, you'll have a devil of a time getting it an even thickness, etc.

Janette, our husbands could be brothers! I can directly relate to what you have said because my husband spends like crazy on my cake needs, much more than necessary. He loves it as much as I do. We are lucky and extremely blessed to have these guys for husbands. We celebrated our 25th anniversary last August and he just get worse at spoiling me with every one. icon_smile.gif
I was joking with Jeffer when I said that because I know a lot of gals do have to funnel funds and hopefully without being caught! I always try and support their cause with a helpful idea if possible. icon_smile.gif

Cheers to our supportive hubbies! icon_smile.gif

I have the big Wilton roller, and it's warped, so be careful if you do get it. I don't use it anymore, I got a PVC pipe.

I may try the PVC at first and see how that works and take it from there!
My husband "discovered" my baking supply cabinet the other night and wanted to know why I had so many bags of chocolate chips, dark cocoa, confectioner's sugar, sprinkles, etc. icon_cool.gif I explained to him the NECESSITY of all of these supplies!!! He stated that chocolate chips were chocolate chips and I only needed one bag at a time! Shocking, I know!!!
I gave him a hug and told him I had to have all of those bags, just in case...you never know when you might need to make cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc!! icon_lol.gif

i've had great success just using my regular old rolling pin, dusted in powdered sugar. i can't justify spending all that on a rolling pin, when mine works just fine. too many other cake "toys" to spend money on, that i can't substitute with something i already have! thumbs_up.gif

The small rolling pin won't cut it for rolling out a large piece of fondant to cover a cake.

I would wait and use a coupon on the Wilton rolling pin, or look and see what kind of rolling pin you have at home. A good heavy marble one works better than the Wilton pin.

Cake supplies can add up quickly, so I would buy a few things at a time and use coupons on the bigger items.

Good luck!

I used my regular plastic tupperware one that I had at home and it worked fine. On the last week of class though I went out and bought the large rolling pin because of the new ring leveling/measurement attatchements that they had. I also hada coupon available. I don't know what they are called but they allow you to roll out the dough into different thickness evenly. They are like the rings on the smaller one but for the large rolling pin. I would suggest trying it with what you have first and then getting a 40 or 50 off coupon when available if you feel you just must have it. Just a thought.

You'll need a large rolling pin...you can always use a regular pin. I went out and got the large one, but classmates of mine brought their regular ones from home. One went to Odd Lots and got one for 3 bucks. The small one won't cut it when you're rolling out a large amount of fondant. It'll take forever and you'll be cursing yourself out. icon_wink.gif

Tee,

I had to count on my fingers but I have you beat. It will be 35 this October.

I'm so excited I have a package coming today. I ordered Fondant and I really needed Pink Fondant. DH said so just order pink you will use the other. He too loves it when I do cakes. He's pushing for cookies.

I have the 19 inch roller but not the smaller one. I really need to get one. I'm going to Michael's tomorrow maybe I'll get one tomorrow.

I have a Michael's and JoAnn's coupon this week.

Things that make us happy.
