Stacking Cake...gaps

I just put together my first stacked cake, and it wasn't so bad, but I did end up with a rather large gap between my layers and I had to fill with frosting border. I would like to know if this is normal and if not how do I get the layers closer together next time, so it looks neater?

I'm guessing no one else noticed but you!! If you cut your dowels just a tad (and I mean a tad!) bit lower than the cake you won't have that problem in the future.

Thanks, you are right no one else noticed, they were to busy looking at the melting and running BCT on top!!!!

What I learned is that if you measure your original dowel at the lowest point of the top of your cake where the next teir will be, and then cut all of the other dowels to that size, that gapping shouldn't be a problem at all.
