Can I Use Skewers For A Cookie Boquet?

If I have time I'd like to make some cookie on sticks for a birthday that I'm doing this weekend. I would be doing the cookies for free, just for experience and something to do... As if making 2 cakes isn't going to be enough work!!
I want to keep the costs minimal and I was just wondering if I could cut to fit some kabob skewers that I have at home and use those? I'm sure they'll be sturdy enough... Is that ok to use??
Also, is there a trick to baking and decorating these? I will be making sugar cookies and decorating them with royal icing I guess?? I will be doing circle cookies to look like pirates!
Thanks!!
Some people use skewers, but my cookies are always too big and the skewer wouldn't support them. There are a couple of tutorials on the home page about baking and decorating cookies. I'll try and add a link.

As for the stick part, do I just stick it in before I put them in the oven?? Do I need to do anything to ensure they wont burn?
This is the age old question. Some do it before some do it while they are hot, and other connect them with royal icing after they are cool.
As for using them, I always use bamboo skewers that i pick up at wal-mart or the grocery store. Who can beat 100 for less than a dollar?

Maybe I need to make smaller cookies. ![]()
Maybe I need to make smaller cookies.
Mine are typically the 4" size (comfort grip cutters) and I typically make them 1/4" thick.
I just push the skewers all the way through the cookie until they are about to come out the other side (I can usually feel it right before it goes through the other side) I then let cool for at least 2 hrs before moving around and don't have any problems.
Stop by a Starbucks and ask for a handful of their stir-sticks...they ALWAYS give them to me, I tell them what I am using them for. They are thin wooden rounded type of stick...I soak them in water before inserting them into the cookie (unbaked) I did a tutorial on my blog...with pics...have FUN!
I've only been using Wilton lollipop sticks and they still look like they are about to bend! I do make my cookies 1/2" thick though (roll out 3/8" and they puff up to about 1/2").
