I don't see why this wouldn't work......I would take some packing tape and make a handled on the back of the impression mat so you have something to pick it up off the buttercream with without getting your fingers in the buttercream.

I have also used dental floss to achieve a diamond pattern on the top of crusted buttercream, but I haven't tried that technique on the sides.

what a great tip about the handle chelle !

I went to a day of sharing in CT this past weekend and we used suncatchers for impressing on buttercream and the instructor told us to do that so we could pick the sucatchers back up - it worked great!!

P.S. I went to AC Moore and spent $10 on suncatchers!!!

I have only used my diamond impression mat on crusting BC. It has a great look! I just keep a paper towel next to me to wipe off the grease between markings. It helps keep the cake smooth.

I've used my diamond impression mat on buttercream. The white and green gift box in my photos is an example. It's very easy to do.

you can use it on crusted bc. make a handle on the back of the mat with tape. also lightly brush powdered sugar into the crevices because when you press in the design the buttercream shifts and you have a chance that the wet bc will surface and stick. when you go to apply the pearls use tweezers. this way you dont take the chance of your fingers pressing into the bc.
