Gloria, Pretty sure they can be covered in anything you would cover a real cake in. I have covered one BC before. First it was covered in plastic wrap so that can be taken off and you can start over. Some people use contact paper too.

Will the bc stay good if you were wanting to keep it as a display cake???

No, the BC won't last - you probably need plaster? or something?

I don't know, but I'm curious, too

I think Royal Icing would be the way to go. It won't go bad. It will dry rock hard so you don't have to worry about people making dents with their fingers when they're checking to see if it's real cake. The only downfall is that it will collect dust and then look gross like the one at the Michaels I go to... I almost offered to make a new one because I feel so discusted whenever I see it icon_lol.gif ! Fondant would be good too. For that you can either make the MMF, which is cheap and it won't much of a waste of money, or the Wilton one that, although it's a bit expensive, it tastes so bad that it's OK if nobody eats it.

I have heard of something called Perma Ice. Could this be what is used on dummies?

At the school I go to they cover the cake dummies in royal icing and after that is dried they put a coating of something on it which seals it so it lasts a long time. Sorry, I guess I should ask one day what the stuff is that they put over the royal icing.

Possibly a clear varnish of some kind--maybe a spray?

I'd think you could royal or also the Wilton class BC (all crisco, no milk). That stuff holds up pretty much forever...blech. But it wouldn't probably be totally permanent either.

I like the spray varnish idea...hmm

Gloria, Go to your search engine and look for aol.cake chats January 9, 1997. If you type all that in it will work. When you get there click on it. When the cake chat page comes up scroll down a little bit and you will see a discussion on this. You can purchase perma ice from www.sugarcraft.com. There it will also tell you that you have to get a special coloring for this and not the food coloring. Did you get your dummies at Dallas Foam? I got about 10 for less than $20 there. If you have any trouble doing this PM me
