Please share with me the names of your favorite artists, books, cds, or websites that I can turn to to learn this art. I am home from the hospital now after foot surgery and would like to learn this for my granddaughter's Pooh cake in August.

Thanks in advance and looking foward to your tips and ideas.

I just bought the book 'The Sculpey Way'. It has a lot of ideas and easy to follow directions. It is actually meant for polymer clay, but works great with fondant and candy clay. There is nothing in it with pooh, though.

Try any books from Maureen Carlson. They are all about poylmer clay figures--simple to life like samples. Michael's does carry some of her books. I used her How to Make Clay Characters to help me with my tea party cake in my photo area. Really great instructions in her book. Just keep in mind though, that gumpaste/fondant does not work quite as easily as clay (clay is softer and much easier to mould details with).

Lindy Smith has some easy directions in her books as well (Storybook Cakes and Celebrate with a Cake)

Good luck! It is a ton of fun!

Hi all, thanks for your tips. I did go to the Pooh site and was able to print out in color so many photos of Pooh and friends to help me with the modeling. Before I went out on my medical leave I did stock up on the new mixed gumpaste from Wilton and a number of sculpey books. I was just wondering if I should use the gumpaste straight already mixed from the bag or to mix it with something? Do I need to add gumtex to make it dry well? Anyone have experience with the new premixed gumpaste from Wilton? I did also pick up Maureen's book as well as a couple from Sue Heaser (all from Michael's) for using modeling clay.

Thank you all for your help.

Best,

No you don't add gumtex to the gumpaste, it will get hard on it's own. You add gumtex to fondant to make it harden faster.

I've used the the new gumpaste. It is a little sticky at first, but it worked well for my dragon wings. I also made roses with it this weekend.

I also used the new Wilton gum paste this weekend. I LOVE it! A little shortening on the hands to knead it and it was just perfect. This is the best idea Wilton has had in a long time. It's about time. thumbs_up.gif
