I am in this same dilema. I started trying to make gumpaste hibiscus and that was not successful so I am attempting the hibiscus in royal icing today. My advice would be to search the galleries and get an idea what you want. I am combining ideas from 3 different cakes to get the look I want. You can also look at the different flowers to help make your descision. HTH

I made this cake for a 40th birthday party, but it might give you an idea for your cake. HTH.

This was made for an anniversary, but I think if you took the bears off the top and just did more flowers, or maybe a waterfall or water scene, it would work out perfect. Hope this gives you some ideas!

Oh btw, my flowers were cut out of candy clay, worked perfectly!

Here are a few tropical cakes I've done. All the hibiscus are royal icing.

It's a plastic dowel covered with fondant 'bark' then slipped over a wooden dowel that is screwed into the base board. The fronds are airbrushed rice piper.

Using silicone plastique, I made a mold from a piece of a tiki string light set. Then, I made the tiki men out of chocolate.

here's one I did for my BIL's birthday

the tiki hut was toothpicks glued onto a plastic container, the totem pole was large tootsie roll on a skewer, and palm trees were plastic.
