The tiered birthday cake I have to finish in 45mins came out great but the BC is melting off the sides from the humidity! How can I mask the droopy lines and buildup on the side? It is creusting BC so everytime I try to smooth it out, it looks worse. I decorated the top with white chocolate curls, but I would like to canvas the sides of the layers with chocolate cigarettes but I cant seem to get the technique down right! ANy ideas or last minute suggestions? If I go a head and deliver the cake like this, they are going to demand a refund! HELP PLEASE!
If you can run to the store, I have seen people use those pepridge farms ling round cookies to cover the sides (I don't know what the name is but they have like little chocolate spots in them). Thats if you have time. Unfortunatly I have no other ideas. Goof Luck.
The round Pepperidge Farm things are called something like perolines?? You can find them near the ice cream toppings or the cookie section of the grocery store.
Are they easy to cut? The cake is in 2 in high layers.
yes, they are very easy to cut. They come in a tall can. If you have nice ribbon, you can tie it all around the pirolenes once they are stuck against the sides of the cake and make a bow for each layer to dress it up.
Regarding the not adhering to the cake....the ribbon around the layers will help hold them against the cake.
pirouettes... they are my favorite cookies too. I think it would look nice

I'm in Dallas, too, and this weekend I made the worst cake I've EVER done. I had to re-ice the blasted thing THREE TIMES because the icing kept slipping off the sides of the cake like socks off a toddler's feet. Once I even had to scrape and reice the sides of the bottom tier while the whole cake was assembled.
I finally spent the night before pickup making a whole wad more gumpaste flowers, and added fondant ribbons under the newly-made flower arrangements to hide some of the worst parts.
Then, I went to the store and the guy came to pick up his big cake while I was gone. (My husband's work partner ordered it.) DH put it in the back of the van for them and off they went. I talked to them later and the guy said it had a crack almost all the way around it. ![]()
Believe me I was praying nothing more happened to that cake before it got eaten!
Last night, DH remembers what he did that he thinks may have caused the crack. He said there was an indention in the back of the van that the cake box almost-but-not-quite fit in, but he thought it would be okay sitting there and thought nothing more of it. What we think happened is that the cake "trampolined" for an hour until it reached its destination. Ugh.
We have emails out to the guy but haven't heard back from him yet.
Did you put the pirouettes on your cake? I love those things. They cut easily with a knife and come in different flavors. Yum!

Thanks everyone for the great tips. In the end, I skipped on the piroettes and just ended up making a "mosaic" pattern with white chocolate curls and chunks. I think this is my worst cake ever. I was upset, but the family said it was very pretty and tasted delicious, so I guess all is well.
