I'm hoping someone can give me some tips on the best/easiest way to make a 3D RV/Motorhome cake. I'm not sure what would be better - using a loaf pan to bake 2 halves in & piece it together (I don't have a long enough loaf pan so it would be 2 pieces end to end) & carved to shape or making a sheet cake & stacking it to the right height then carving to shape? Also, if I was to cut & stack the sheet cake do I need to dowel it? How do I support it so it won't topple?
Thanks in advance for any input!

My first thought would be a loaf pan for the general shape. When you do find out let us know - wanted to do this for my sister and her husband as I missed both their birthdays, and wanted to make a cake for both of them. Trick will be to get it the same colors as their RV.

I thought loaf pan first too but I don't know if that will be high enough. That's why I thought maybe stacking sheet cake instead.

The colors will be the easy part - it's ivory/off white with teal & burgandy stripes.

Anyone else have any ideas on how I can do this without it falling over??

Wow!!! Thanks for the detailed response Doug!! I really appreciate that. It actually never dawned on me to seperate the 2 layers by cakeboard! This looks like an easy way to do it without fear of it falling over. Now I'm really excited to make it!! Too bad I have to wait another 3 weeks!

MomLtr - the cake is done & in my pics for you to see. I followed Doug's instructions & made a 9x13 & cut four sections. Then filled & stacked 2 & put a cake board on top then did the other 2. Worked like a charm. He had suggested dowels as well but since mine wasn't super tall I didn't use dowels.

Thanks again Doug for the great sketch & all your help with this cake!
